Obituary

James ("Jim") Rulon Johnson, 70, of Orem, Utah returned to his Heavenly Home on September 11, 2021. He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. Jim was born on June 11, 1951, in Provo, Utah, where he spent his childhood and younger years. As a child he enjoyed playing all sports and developed a great love for reading, which love continued throughout his life. He grew up watching westerns and playing cowboys. He considered Heaps a Pizza his first real job. There he enjoyed cranking up the juke box and working alongside his friends. He could tell lots and lots of stories about working at Heaps. Jim took great pride in education and had a passion for his religion and work. He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oregon. During his mission he was first introduced to the field of computer programming. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a master's degree in computer science, which was the perfect major for him. He enjoyed programming and had a very rewarding and fulfilling career, working for Eyring Research Institute, WordPerfect, Intel Corporation and lastly, FamilySearch. He taught courses at Brigham Young University in computer science, inspiring others with his great love for this field of study. His employment at FamilySearch was the highlight of his career. At FamilySearch he worked on software to capture and digitize genealogical records from around the world. He felt fortunate to have been involved with the work and dedicated people there. His contributions with these companies, but especially FamilySearch, will benefit many for years to come. Jim loved hunting, hiking, riding his side-by-side, pickleball, fishing and being in nature, but most of all, he loved his family. Jim was a giving person, especially of his time and talents. He loved to do things that brought others together. Jim was faced with many health challenges over the years, but he patiently worked through each of them and never complained. He faced his last health challenge with courage to the very end. It is rare indeed to meet someone who makes such a positive impact on the lives of others as Jim did. Our lives—and countless others—have been greatly blessed by his time with us. He will be dearly missed. Jim is survived by his wife Kim; his children Jared (Cheryl), Matt (Melena) and Emily (Cam); and his brother Danny (Merilyn, Linda (deceased)). He also leaves seven grandchildren, extended family, and friends that greatly loved him. He was predeceased by his first wife Tauna; his parents Rulon and Zella; his brothers Ivan, Royle and Evan; and his sister Rose. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021, at the Heatheridge Stake Center located at 450 East 2000 North, Orem, Utah, at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30 a.m. An additional viewing will be held at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem, Utah, on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Jim will be laid to rest at the Orem City Cemetery.
