Obituary

Dr. James Kevin Moore, 69, passed away peacefully at home in Springville, Utah on September 16th, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on May 28th, 1957 in Seattle, Washington, Jim was the son of Leonard Maurice Moore and Elizabeth Hansen Moore. The youngest in the family, he grew up alongside his three sisters, Linda (Moore) Jardine, Kathleen (Moore) Sasnett, and Terri (Moore) Brown in Bothell, Washington.

The Moore family’s love and talent for music shaped their lives and led Jim on his vocational path as he graduated from Inglemoor High School in Bothell, Washington, in 1975. He studied voice on a music scholarship at Brigham Young University, then at the University of Southern California, ultimately graduating with his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Music, and then his Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance from the University of Washington in 2000.

A music professor and professional singer who performed in over 3500 operatic and musical theater performances across Europe, Asia, and the United States, he was also a gifted educator and vocal coach, teaching for many years at institutions including Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA) and Howard University (Washington, DC). He continued to work in higher education as Vice President of Institutional Development and Director of Recruitment at Lake Erie College of Medicine, transitioning to a successful career as a Pre-Medical Professions advisor to students at Weber State University, inspiring and guiding students in their creative and professional pursuits.

Jim was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served a mission in Japan Okayama from 1977 to 1979, and after returning home held multiple callings, including serving as bishop of the Erie First Ward in the Jamestown New York stake, and stake choir conductor of the Springville Spring Creek Stake. He loved the gospel, had a fierce and abiding testimony, and was a strong witness of the power of the spirit and the priesthood to his family and friends. He was also very proud that he was a Temple Ordinance Worker. Jim raised four children with his former spouse, Elizabeth (Lathrop) Moore in Kirkland, Washington, and later married the late Gina (Vikari) Moore, with whom he shared 20 happy years and had one son, James. In his later years he found the love of his life Paula (Franck) Moore, and they were happily married in the Mount Timpanogos Temple in 2015, settling in Springville, Utah thereafter. They enjoyed watching movies and loved traveling, and led a study abroad trip to Europe in 2016. They especially enjoyed spending time with their scripture study group, trying new restaurants, and family time with their grandchildren.

Jim was an inspiration to all those who knew him. He had a capacious sense of humor, a roaring laugh, and loved to share stories and memories with family and friends. He was a loyal and devoted father, brother, uncle, and husband, demonstrating the power of commitment and perseverance by running a full marathon before the age of 50. He really loved going to the movies with his kids, pulling April Fool’s Day pranks on unsuspecting family members, and playing board games with family late into the night. He rooted for the Seattle Seahawks, loved pecan pie (and was the star pie-baker at Thanksgiving) and long road trips, and was a special mentor and guide to his children, nieces, and nephews.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Beth, his brother Lenny, and his sister Terri. He is survived by his wife, Paula; his five children and their spouses, Jennifer (Jeff), Justin (Rachel), Daniel (Kjersten), Briana (Mark), and James Moore; three stepsons, Noah (Stephanie) Sparks, Jacob (Tamara) Sparks, and David (Dalis) Sparks, and 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda Jardine and Kathleen Sasnett, and a host of loving friends and family. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, September 26th at the Spring Creek Stake Center at 760 N. 400 E. in Springville at 11am, with a viewing from 9:30-10:30am.
