Janet Louise Moffitt, our loving sister, daughter, and aunt passed away in her home on June 8, 2018. She was born Feb. 12, 1949 in Provo, UT to Helen R. Snowberger and J. Weldon Moffitt. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Clark University in Worcester, MA. There she made lifelong friends who visited her family and traveled with Jan throughout Utah's beautiful canyons. In 1978, she graduated from the BYU J. Reuben Clark Law School. She worked as legal counsel for the Utah State Industrial Commission and later served as administrative law judge. In 1990, Janet was an attorney for the Workers Compensation Fund of Utah and, in 1997, became Vice President and Assistant General Counsel. In her 30s, Jan volunteered with an organization to aid those affected by HIV. She was matched with a young man, Tommy, to give support in what was then a fatal and rapid death. Their relationship began with outings because they enjoyed many similar activities and progressed until Janet became one of his full-time care givers. Tommy's health declined as the disease progressed destroying his body, causing blindness, until he was hospital bound. Janet was constantly by his side throughout this path until his death. Knowing Tommy led to her involvement with others in the LGTBQ community where she made many friendships. Perennial gardening became an interest, learning and then sharing her knowledge, raising and giving away new plants, and participating in fund raising through community tours. She was a beloved neighbor among the beautiful gardens along her street. After retiring in 2015, she devoted her time to her first love---the raising and training of her miniature schnauzers. One of the greatest joys in Jan's life was her dogs. She started showing in obedience trials with her first dog, Misha, a Norwegian Elkhound. Later, she rescued a little grey dog named Alex and fell in love with miniature schnauzers. When Alex was still young, she searched out reputable breeders and obtained a little girl named Chrissy. At this time she became more involved in training and trialing and was able to obtain obedience, agility, and tracking titles on this sweet little girl. When Chrissy was about 4, Jan obtained another schnauzer from a local breeder in SLC. This was a beautiful black and silver boy that she named Chief. Jan tried the confirmation side of dog sports and was able to obtain a breed championship as well as titles in obedience, tracking, and earth dog. Chief was the first miniature schnauzer to earn the American Miniature Schnauzer Clubs Versatility Excellent award requiring titles in 4 different areas of competition. They also went on to earn additional titles in lure coursing where he was also the first and only schnauzer to earn the Coursing Ability Excellent title requiring 50 qualifying scores. Chief and Jan also earned their RATN title which is a novice level in Barnhunt. Jan and Chief had an extra special bond which allowed them to excel in anything they pursued. While Chief was still young, another local bred dog came into their lives. Bumper was a wonderful addition and while he didn't have the temperament for some of the more intricate sports, he too enjoyed lure coursing and barn hunt and is only one leg away from his coursing excellent title. However, Rat hunting is his love and just this past February they were able to obtain his RATCH (Champion level) title in Barnhunt. Jan always said that Bumper's purpose in life was to make her laugh. In addition to Alex, Chrissy, Chief and Bumper, the newest member to join her pack was Rogi. Another beautiful Black and Silver boy that she was just beginning to train. He currently has a novice Barnhunt title. Because of her involvement with dogs and events, Jan spent many years traveling around the mountain west. She has many friends in the Dog Community and would always offer a helping hand, a willing smile, or genuine words of encouragement. She was well loved and will be sorely missed. Jan is survived by her mother, her siblings, Debbie Wilkins, Ariane Newell (Neil), David (Jolynn), Martha Peacock (Greg), and Roger. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, as well as her 3 cherished dogs. A celebration of Jan's life will be held on Monday, June 18 at 2pm at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 N. in Orem. Visitation will be one hour prior to memorial service. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to a charity of choice.
