Obituary

Jared Edison Newman passed away on February 11th, 2024 at the age of 45 after a brave battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed.

Jared was born August 2, 1978 in Portland, Oregon to Terri and Tom Newman. He was the second of five children, and loved his siblings dearly. Growing up on the family farm in beautiful Washington State, he developed a love for the outdoors, oceans, and animals. He spent many happy days exploring the forests, hunting for snakes and lizards, and building forts among the trees. At a young age, he excelled in music and sports. Jared won the 800 meter State Hershey's Track Meet at age 13 in Tacoma Washington. Later, he went on to Varsity letter in track and field, cross-country, football, and wrestling at La Center High School. During his high school running career, he competed at the state-level for multiple years in both track and field and cross-country. His 3200 meter time still stands today as the La Center High record and is a testament to his determination and endurance.

Jared attended Ricks College, now BYU-Idaho, where he studied business and ran track and cross-country on scholarship. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Cherry Hill New Jersey Mission speaking Spanish. There he developed a lifelong love for Latin foods.

In the summer of 2000 while working as an affectionately nicknamed "security bro" selling security systems in the Bay Area, he met the love of his lifetime - Emily Hatch. She was smitten with his kindness, ability to make any situation fun, and the way he nervously told her "te amo" for the first time. She learned quickly she'd never be able to keep up with him running; he could literally run circles around her! Instead, while sharing many laughs, she tried her best to match his running pace - while riding a bike. They were married on a beautiful day in the Oakland California Temple on March 23, 2001, with the sweet phrase from Robert Browning,"Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be" as their now tender marriage motto.

The "new" Newmans spent their first few years together living in California, and there joyfully welcomed their first child, Allison Virgina in 2004. They moved to Utah that year for Jared to complete school at BYU, and soon after joyfully welcomed their second child, James Edison, in 2005. Fatherhood brought Jared so much joy. He and Emily would joke that they sometimes kept their kids awake far too late just enjoying being with them, seeing them learn silly new things, and soaking in every minute with them.

Jared spent his career working at Costco, where he made many wonderful friends. He loved his work schedule that allowed him to be home early in the afternoon to enjoy more time with his family. We fondly remember when he began working stocking the freezers there and young Allison would visit and open each freezer door shouting "Daddy??" until she could happily find him. Our family found great amusement as she did this in every subsequent grocery store, to the confused looks of people nearby.

Jared brought joy and fun wherever he went, and was affectionately called "Jungle Jared" by his adoring nieces and nephews. He could outrun all of them and loved to energetically play and wrestle with them. He had a contagious, booming laugh and we loved seeing the sometimes random things that would strike him as funny.

Jared shared his love for the outdoors, running, games and all living things with his children and wife. They loved to explore together, and Jared was notorious for pointing high up to any spot of a hill or mountain and climbing to that point in what seemed like sheer minutes. On any family outing you could find Jared and his kids happily searching for lizards, bugs, crabs, or truly anything moving they could find. He was seemingly fearless on their recent cherished family trip to Hawaii as he hiked, skydived, and bodysurfed in the ocean. Their family shares a love for the mountains and the ocean that will never be forgotten.

Soon after being diagnosed with cancer in 2021, he bravely went ahead with plans to hike Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams with his children and some of his siblings. Although difficult for him to complete, they will forever treasure the memories of scaling the snowy peaks with him and enjoying a spectacular view together. Until we meet again our wonderful husband, dad, son, brother, uncle & friend - enjoy the view for us and know you are deeply loved and missed.

Jared is survived by his loving wife Emily, their children Allison (19) James (18); parents Tom & Terri Newman; siblings Peter, Rachel, Becki, Liz; parents-in-law Rick & Julia Hatch, and many adoring siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews.
