IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeanette Marie
Ostler
April 28, 1956 – September 29, 2024
It is impossible to sum up the life of an incredible woman and loving mother, wife, grandma, daughter, sister, and friend. Some words that have been used to describe Jeanette Marie Ostler are: a peaceful presence, Christ-like, pure, inspiring, kind, wonderful, thoughtful, calm. Her beautiful spirit left this world on Sunday, September 29, 2024, surrounded by her husband and children, at the age of 68 after a 10 year journey with breast cancer. She quietly fought hard every single day and came out victorious every single day.
Jeanette was born in Salt Lake City, UT on April 28, 1956; the firstborn child of John Garry Roberts and Leola Peterson Roberts. She had 2 sisters and 2 brothers that followed in subsequent years. The family spent their growing-up years between Utah and Southern California, eventually landing in Richfield, UT when Jeanette was 16 years old. The family all took part in running a motel in Richfield at that time. She lived in one of the rooms for a while with her sister so that she could be there to check people in and clean rooms. To this day she hates cleaning bathrooms. After the motel was sold, she was an employee at Cove View Golf Course which her dad managed.
While growing up, her life centered around her close church community. She was able to be involved with various sports such as basketball and softball. She took part in church productions, including a regional dance festival and several plays. She played the piano well and had a beautiful singing voice. In high school, she was part of the student council in the role of bookkeeper and said she would have loved to go into bookkeeping if she had not gone into education for a career. Her bookkeeping skills were alive and well throughout her life as she kept meticulous records and was the financial caretaker for her family.
She went to Brigham Young University in Provo, spending 4 months at BYU Hawaii with her sister and a few friends before graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor's in Education. She taught at Joaquin Elementary School in Provo and then spent the rest of her teaching career at Westridge Elementary. She was an incredible educator and taught 2nd-6th grades throughout her career. Her Westridge family was an important part of her life and she talked often about how lucky she felt to be associated with so many other wonderful educators.
She had taught for 30 years before retiring in 2008 to spend time with her boys who were involved in various high school sports.
Having met in Richfield at Cove View Golf Course and also being associated in Provo, she married John Eugene Ostler in the Jordan River Temple on July 29, 1982. She often said that it was his motorcycle that drew her to him.
Jeanette was born to be a mother and after many surgeries and heartache she got her wish and had 3 children, 1 girl and 2 boys. From then on, her highest priority in life was her children. She was endlessly supportive of them- going to every and all extracurricular activity and academic endeavors. They all knew she was their #1 fan. She was the golf and soccer mom always providing drinks and cookies for the team. She would often write thoughtful notes of encouragement for her kids and was there for every injury, disappointment, or celebration. She loved being the grandma to 7 wonderful grandchildren. Her face lit up every time she got to be around them, even up to the day she passed away.
Jeanette was quiet and fiercely independent. She designed and installed a firepit in her backyard for her family after her kids had outgrown their childhood playset. She created a sandbox area for her grandchildren and loved being involved in household improvement projects. She called dibs on mowing the lawn every week and did that for as long as her body would let her.
Jeanette was organized and efficient to a degree that was impressive and mind-blowing to all. She created an orderly, peaceful, and calm home for her family, tried to teach her daughter how to declutter and effectively organize, and kept memory books, medical records, and financial records for her husband and kids. She was always doing for others, especially her family. She would often eat standing up to allow her to quickly move on to the next task, took meals to people that needed it, and would go back to her school to work on the endless teacher things after her kids were in bed so that her job did not take away time from them. She was caring, kind and thoughtful. She would do anything she could to make life better or easier for others. Her kids will never forget how she would always stand at the door waving good-bye to them as they drove away, after spending time together. She had such a good heart and you could feel of her love and care for you.
Her faith was always at the forefront of her life. It was who she was- every moment of every day. She was faithful in all things and exuded the purest Christlike love and attributes. She lived her faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by sacrificing and serving all those around her in the best way she could. She was a light and had a calming, peaceful, kind spirit about her that was felt by all she came in contact with. She loved serving in various church callings and especially loved serving in both the Timpanogos and Provo temples for years, all while going through the difficulties of cancer. Her legacy of faith, goodness, and Christlike love will always live on through memories of her.
