Jerry Lloyd Bauer
Jerry's life was marked by curiosity, learning, faith, and devotion to family.
Jerry Lloyd Bauer died at home surrounded by his loved ones on October 15, 2026, after a life marked by curiosity, learning, faith, and devotion to family. He was born on March 5, 1937, in Washington, D.C., to Charles LeRoy Bauer and Alice May Lloyd. Jerry and his brother David grew up in a Navy family and spent theirchildhood in California, Hawaii, and Illinois.
From 1957 to 1960, Jerry served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. His love for Brazil and the Portuguese language continued throughout his life. He attended Brigham Young University, initially studying electrical engineering. Wanting to read great literature in its original language, he changed his major to Spanish and graduated. A scholarship then took him to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign for further study in Latin literature.
After eight years in Illinois he came back to California. Much of his free time was spent skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Jerry married Mary Hunter in the Oakland Temple in 1978, and their son, Rees, was born in 1980. Jerry was hiking counselor for Boy Scouts and enjoyed camping and hiking with Rees.
Jerry approached life as an opportunity to learn and spoke of looking forward to the adventure of the afterlife.
His varied career included work as a controller, management information systems director, software developer, and consultant. In 1998, Jerry moved his family to Utah, where he wrote software for the Church’s missionary department before retiring in 2000.
Jerry continued pursuing new interests after retirement, earning a culinary arts degree from Utah Valley State College in 2003. He provided home cooked meals through his business, Carefree Dinners. He worked as a private chef, taught at the culinary department of Utah Valley State College, and shared homemade bread with neighbors.
Beginning in 2004, Jerry and Mary served a senior service mission in South Provo for four and a half years. Jerry later served in Orem, preparing genealogical records for public indexing. His service in the Provo and Orem temples brought him particular happiness, and he especially enjoyed speaking Portuguese with temple patrons.
An avid reader and lifelong learner, Jerry explored history, scripture, languages, technology, and cooking with enthusiasm. He loved conversation, approached problems thoughtfully, and valued the compassion and understanding he gained through serving others.
He will be remembered for his curiosity, humor, thoughtfulness, and love.
