Joan Maxine Brown Ackley August 23, 1939 - August 3, 2018 On Friday, August 3, 2018, Joan Ackley passed away at the age of seventy-eight. Her husband of fifty five years, David Ackley, was at her side. Joan battled Alzheimer's for over a decade. Joan earned a degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University in 1962. Joan taught 4th and 5th grade and always had a wonderful connection with children. Even after her memory had been taken by advanced Alzheimer's, she would light up whenever her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit. Joan remained loving and kind even as the disease progressed. Her most common catch phrases included, "I love you," and, "Can I go to sleep counting my blessings?" For the last two years of her life, she was lovingly cared for full-time by her husband and her son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Ackley. Joan was born in Portola, California to Earl Dean Brown and Edith Lucile Taylor. Joan married the love of her life, David Ackley, in the LDS Los Angeles, California temple on June 28, 1963. They led a full life together including a five year adventure in the Republic of the Marshall Islands with five of their boys from 1986 to1991. Joan was very involved in her community and LDS ward of forty six years. She loved to listen to show tunes and music brought her great joy. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, River Ackley. She is survived by her siblings, Carol Ann and Dale Brown (CA); her husband, David Ackley, and their eight children: Jennifer Ackley Gammon (Todd) of Provo, UT; David Ackley (Neilani) of Majuro, Republic of Marshall Islands; William Ackley (Denise) of Eagle Mountain, UT; Eric Ackley (Kelsi) of El Paso, TX; Joseph Ackley of Kanab, UT; Michael Ackley (Sarah) of Provo, UT; Jeremy Ackley (Becca) of Lindon, UT; and Jeffrey Ackley (Cami) of Provo, UT. Joan and David have thirty two grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held Thursday, August 9th, 2018 from 9:30-10:30 AM with funeral services directly following at 11:00 AM at the LDS chapel 1090 West 1020 South in Provo, Utah.
