Joan Isbell Herlin, 89, died Thursday, September 16, 2021, in Provo, Utah, with family members surrounding. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Wayne Richard Herlin; five children: Richard (Ann) Herlin of Park City, UT; Kenneth (LeAnne) Herlin of Kearns, UT; William (Julie) Herlin of Wilsonville, OR; Thomas (Carolyn) Herlin of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Rebecca (Alex) Stickler of Bealeton, VA; nineteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Sherie Iverson, Mary Lee Harrison, and Victor Isbell. She was preceded in death by a son, David; two grandchildren; and her twin sister, Jean Isbell.
Joan was born September 2, 1932, to Kenneth and LaPreal Isbell in Richfield, Utah. She graduated from Richfield High School in 1950. She attended Branch Agricultural College (now Southern Utah University) and the University of Utah, where she played flute in the marching band and completed a bachelor's degree in elementary education (1954). She earned a master's degree in education from Brigham Young University in 1968. She loved children and worked for a time as an elementary school teacher and taught piano lessons.
She married Wayne Herlin in the Manti Temple on November 25, 1953. They made their home in Salt Lake City and, later, Orem, Utah. Joan spent her life serving others and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her church service included many years in the Primary (children's organization) and as an organist. With her husband, she served a full-time proselytizing mission in the Japan Tokyo North Mission (1995-97), and a part-time service mission at the Provo, Utah, Missionary Training Center (1999-2005). She was a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the service group Yeshera.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, September 24, 2021, 11:00 am at the Hillcrest 4th Ward, 400 East 800 South, Orem. Visitation will be at same location, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. The family requests that attendees wear masks. A Live Broadcast of service will begin at 11:00 am on www.walkersanderson.com where condolence may also be shared with the family.
