Obituary

At the end of a beautifully full life, John William Flygare graduated to Heaven to be with his loving wife Flora, supported by his family the evening of April 11, 2019. To know John, was to love him. Most knew him as a good friend, storyteller, joke cracker, lawn mower, BYU fan, and someone who served his family, God and others faithfully. What he would never tell people is that he is an American War Hero, a hardworking father, honest man, and an adoring grandfather, great grandfather and even great great grandfather. John was born March 14, 1925 to Clarence Edward & Vivian Euphemia Allen Flygare, in Provo, Utah. He and his siblings moved with their mother to Heber after his father was killed in a train accident and his mother remarried Rollan Giles. During the years of the Great Depression, from the time he was a little boy, he learned hard work from Daddy Giles and his older brothers. Doing everything from pulling nails out of old barn wood when he was five to working in the mines at a young age of 14. For fun he loved any kind of ball game, especially baseball, fishing, swimming and probably pestering his older siblings. He loved making people smile and laugh. He attended Wasatch High School until the baseball coach for Pleasant Grove High School asked him to move down and play for them. This is where all his dreams came true and he met his bride Flora Matilda Hooley. They were married on March 6, 1943 and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on October 13, 1950. John served in U.S. Army during World War II, leaving May 1944 for Fort Benning GA. He served his country honorably until the war ended. Serving in Germany, Austria, France, England and Poland. He brought freedom to thousands under the direction of General George W. Patton. After the war ended, he was asked to be a part of the Danube Sym-Follies, a reimagined Glee club from Fort Benning. They performed across Europe for troops to try and raise moral after the ravages of war. He returned home to his family in December of 1946. He worked hard for Geneva Steel, with a short time as a gas station owner in Green River, Utah, and then back to Geneva Steel a few years later.  After retiring he worked part time at Macey's grocery store in Orem, making friends every day with his charming smile, happy demeanor and funny one liners and jokes. He served faithfully as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, making and keeping sacred covenants. Answering the call to serve in various capacities from stake clerk to temple missionary. His greatest work was the work he did in his home. He loved and served his wife Flora, and their family. Together they have 5 sons; John Kay (Shari), Bruce (Kathleen), Morris (Paula), Dean (Cheryl), David (Wendy). Spending time visiting with their (25) grandchildren, their (50) great grandchildren, and (7) great great grandchildren was how he loved spending his time. He was preceded in death by his loving wife and numerous loved ones and survived by sisters; Mary Jean Davis and Colleen Morrison. Funeral services will be held Saturday April 20, 2019 at 11:00 am MDT, interim prior from 9:30-10:30am at the Windsor 1 st Ward Chapel, 1505 N 130 E, Orem, UT. A viewing will be held Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E 800 N, Orem, UT, from 6-8pm. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the American Legion Post 72. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.walkersanderson.com
