IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John James
Lockwood
December 5, 1947 – March 31, 2025
John James Lockwood, 77, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, in Provo, Utah. A devoted husband, father, and friend, John lived a life marked by service and kindness.
Born on December 5, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, John grew up in Southern California before attending Brigham Young University.
John had a deep desire to make people feel seen and valued. He was always supportive of his wife and daughters and showed up to performances, drove to rehearsals, and was the biggest cheerleader of their artistic careers. Whether anonymously paying for a missionary's meal or sharing stories over dinner with friends, he lived with generosity at heart. His dogs were dear companions to him, just one more reflection of the love he gave so freely.
John's faith played a central role throughout his life. He was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California and later served faithfully as a missionary in Birmingham, England, sparking a lifelong connection to all things from the UK. His love for the temple was profound; he found great purpose and peace in serving there regularly.
John's love of family history reflected his reverence for the past and his desire to connect generations. He cherished opportunities to serve alongside his family in Nauvoo and Savior of the World. He loved nature and was proud of his water lilies and koi. John brought his dry humor with him wherever he went, joking with many a waitress or neighbor, yet he would move heaven and earth if someone needed help.
John worked for WordPerfect, Marriott's Great America, and IBM before launching his own ventures: JG&J Telecommunications and Line One, Inc. He was always getting the latest gadgets, and his basement and garage—filled with outdated tech—stand as a testament to his ever-evolving curiosity.
Beyond his career accomplishments, John found joy in many hobbies. He was an avid HAM radio operator and had a deep appreciation for history, science, and music. He could usually be found listening to classical or oldies. He loved a good murder mystery. His father instilled in him a love for planes, trains, and automobiles.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gayle; daughters Heather Woodman and Melinda DeBirk; sister Nancy Ramsey; nephew Doug Ramsey; niece Katie Ramsey; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many others whose lives were touched by his kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Virginia Lockwood; and brother-in-law Gordon Ramsey.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1674 North 200 West in Orem, Utah (84057). A viewing will precede the service from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the same location.
May John's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspire others to live with the same compassion, humor, and heartfelt generosity that defined his life. In lieu of flowers, the family would invite you to pay for a missionary's meal, as John would do.
