Obituary

Johnnie Winnard Berg

Born: 6/15/1934 in Salt Lake City, UT - Died: 4/1/2023 in Salt Lake City, UT

Our hearts are truly broken at this time as we mourn the loss of our Dad, Granddad and Great Granddad. This amazing, loving and kind man passed peacefully. Johnnie, who went by John, was born June 15th, 1934. The first born son of Ole Andreas and Dorothy Winnard Berg. They were so excited to have this new baby in their lives. Ole was an immigrant from Norway and as a 17 year old in 1906 came through Ellis Island.

Shortly after Johnnie's birth they moved to Southern California where in 1937 John became an older brother to his best friend Gary. John loved growing up in California. At a young age his Dad would take him fishing. They would rent a boat and row out into the ocean and catch fish. John cherished these moments with his Dad and gained a great love for fishing. He was truly happiest casting a fishing pole anywhere. Whether it was in the ocean, off a pier, off a rocky shore, out of a boat, or on a river. His Dad also took him to sporting events. Another loving memory of spending time with his Dad. At age 11 John's Dad passed away. Devastated he relied on his loving memories of time spent with his Dad fishing.

On Jan 7, 1956 John married Janice Carol Grider. He tells that one of the reasons he fell in love with her was because she would go fishing with him and that she loved doing the things he enjoyed doing. They welcomed their son John Michael Berg, in December of that same year.

John and Carol spent 45 years together. Working hard, Traveling, raising their children and living life, and of course fishing. John loved Utah and longed to live there. They would come to Utah to visit family yearly for their vacations and during the hunting season. His brother Gary would accompany them on most of their vacations. They finally were able to move to Utah in 1980. John's good friend Reese Larsen and his wife Barbara moved from California with them. They bought homes next to each other. Spending time with family and friends was a priority for John. He and Mike spent many deer hunting and fishing trips with their cousins, the Herman's. They went on several fishing trips to Alaska.

Carol passed away Dec. 26, 2001. John picked up the pieces and became involved in the things that mattered most to him. His family. He attended dance recitals, ball games, he loved playing cards, games and BBQ's. His favorite trips with his family were to Lake Powell and Fish Lake. There were many family reunions at Fish Lake. John had been taking his family there since 1963. One of his favorite trips was going with Mike's Church Youth Group to the Uintah's backcountry on horseback. They were able to fish the natural lakes on the trip.

He served a Church mission to Ventura, California from 2007-2008. He served in many positions in the church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol, father Ole, mother Dorothy, brother Gary. He is survived by his son Mike and wife Criste. Granddaughter Jennie and husband Dustin Hebbert, Grandson Jared and wife Hannah Berg, Granddaughter Ashley and husband Blake Devereaux and Grandson Adam Berg. 5 Great grandchildren, Ivy, Gabriel, Maggie, Braylin and Amelia. Daughter Dawn Maureen and husband Kurt Vest. Granddaughters Lindsay, McKayla, Cassidy and Hailee.

"Thank you" to all the Doctors, skilled nurses and Aides that provided loving care to John.
