IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Alma
Ott
December 23, 1957 – October 9, 2021
Joseph Alma Ott was born December 23rd, 1957, to J. Bevan Ott and RaNae Ott (Bettridge). He passed away on October 9th, 2021, after a sudden fight with kidney failure and pneumonia. He passed peacefully with his family surrounding him in Provo. He is now able to see his Father Bevan and son Casey once again.
Joe was born in San Francisco, California, and even though the family didn't live there long, it was enough of a reason to be a die hard 49'ers fan to the end. His parents had their hands full with many young kids, Joe being one of the more rambunctious ones growing up. Many of the activities his parents did with him growing up turned into some of his lifelong hobbies and even his career. His best friends were his parents and he regularly said how appreciative he was of them for taking extra time with him and truly loving him throughout his whole life. The entrepreneurial spirit in him used the skills he was taught by his family to open a bike retail and repair shop, a coin resell, a Volkswagen restoration shop, and become a lead mechanic for Volkswagen in Utah. For all the things he learned from his family, he never was quite sure where he got his "Hippie" attitude towards life though. He regularly wore his peace sign necklace as his badge of honor.
Through his whole life Joe struggled with his mental health. This did not stop him from fulfilling service to his church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and to those who struggled with similar challenges. With support from his loved ones and from the blessings he received from serving and reaching out to those who needed spiritual upliftment, he was able to accomplish great things. As a member and patient advocate of Wasatch Mental Hospitals Governing Body, he was able to help these groups better understand what was needed for those with certain mental disabilities. His greatest joy in service though was his time he was able to be a temple worker and serve as a member of a Branch Presidency. It was very tough on his body at times, but his faith got him through it. He knew his Savior very closely and showed it by always giving a listening ear to anyone who needed it and doing so without passing the slightest hint of judgment. He was quick to give blessings and never missed a home teaching visit. He found joy in all these things, and they gave him the strength he needed to move on past his daily mental strife. He was a good friend to those who needed it.
It would also be a disservice if it wasn't mentioned that he was a Certified HAM Radio Operator, addict, and nerd. He made cheesy T-shirts about this hobby and dedicated his office space to having as much radio equipment as possible. He went to conventions and was able to catch along the way some vintage equipment that he was immensely proud of. He kept this hobby through his whole life and made many of his best friends through it. He was proud of this community because he felt HAM Operators provided support to people in emergency situations. His love for all this came because he loved talking to people, and HAM was his Zen place to do that.
Last but not least, he was a father and grandfather who loved his children and grandkids immensely. He was always ready to offer advice when asked and was ready to listen at all times. He provided a safe place for his family and his welcomed sense of humor could bring the kids to tears at times.
To sum up Joe's life, his favorite musician Joni Mitchell put it perfectly:
"Keep a good heart. That's the most important thing in life. It's not how much money you make or what you can acquire. The art of it is to keep a good heart."
Even with living through lifelong struggles, Joe lived this until the end. We love you dad, until we see you again alongside your son, father, and Savior.
Joe was survived by his mother RaNae, his children Herschel and Christine, his good friend and former wife Cristina Andrada, and his brothers and sisters Dixie, Beva, Stephen, Virginia, and James.
