Obituary

Josephine (Jody) Horne Counsell, 93, peacefully and sweetly returned to her Heavenly Father January 22, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was an only child, born November 13, 1929 in Ogden, Utah, to loving parents Clarence Loraine Horne and Evangeline Greenwood. She resided in Ogden, Utah most of her early childhood years.

Her grandmother made arrangements to have her baptized at the age of nine and a half. At that time her parents moved their family to Southern California, settling eventually in Santa Monica, California. Jody finished her education, graduating from Santa Monica High School.

She married her high school sweetheart, John Edward Counsell Jr. on June 6, 1948 in Santa Monica, California. They met in high school (SAMOHI), and dated two years before they decided to (tie the knot). Over the course of eight years, they were blessed with three girls and one boy.

They were sealed together on June 6, 1958, on their 10th wedding anniversary, in the Los Angeles, California Temple. They shared 70 wonderful years together.

She loved camping, boating, and we have continued this tradition in our families. Mom and dad spent their whole life camping and boating and experiencing this beautiful world.

Jody started out working at a hospital as a "tray girl," malt shop and in a machine shop where she operated a deburring machine. Mom and dad owned and operated an LDS bookstore while raising their family in Simi Valley, California. After a job change, they relocated to Orem, Utah, in 1972 and Orem became their permanent home to live out the rest of their lives. After moving to Utah, she worked in china sales as a department manager and bridal consultant at Z.C.M.I. from which she retired after working there for 15 years.

She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She spent her life serving with joy and dedication. She had a strong and abiding testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ. She served in the presidencies of Relief Society, Primary, Young Women, Sunday School, ward music organizations, taught in Relief Society and served as a visiting teacher and minister. She loved her Cascade 6th Ward Family and we, as her children, are so appreciative of the care and comfort they gave her.

She was all about family, and dedicated her life to us. She has left us a rich heritage and legacy of love, commitment and enduring to the end.

She is survived by her children Carol Sapp (Chris), Candy Parkinson (Lloyd), Tami Stanley (Mark) and John Counsell III (Leslie Ewell), 17 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Counsell, Jr.

Jody's family feels deep appreciation for the compassionate care she received over the past month by Rachel, her hospice nurse and many others who contributed to her care.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 26, 2023 at the Walker-Sanderson Funeral Home located at 646 East 800 North, Orem, Utah from 11:00 to 12:00. Graveside services and interment will be held at approximately 12:30 at Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem, Utah.

We take comfort in the quote by Heber C. Grant:

"Death is but the taking up again of the life we broke off when we came to earth."
