Obituary

Julie Sheffield Thurman passed away peacefully on April 13, 2020 in her Orem home, surrounded by her husband and children. She ended a twelve year, on and off, battle with cancer during which she inspired countless families, friends, and individuals. Julie was born July 28th, 1963 in Provo, UT to Ella and Erwin Sheffield. Both Ella and Erwin had previously lost their spouses to untimely deaths. Julie joined Ella's (Ellsworth) six children, and Erwin's (Katherine) five children, to make a perfect dozen in all. Julie grew up in Springville, UT and developed lifelong friendships with her siblings, their families, and so many friends and neighbors. When Julie was 17, her father, Erwin, passed away. Her mother later married Marv Naylor, who was a wonderful stepfather and friend to her. In 1984, Julie met her sweetheart, Tim, while working together at Central Bank in Provo, UT. They were married in Springville in January of 1985, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Utah Temple. Both Julie and Tim found their greatest joy in raising their five children: Tyler, Christopher, Michael, Danielle, and Jackson. When Christopher was only a year old, he was diagnosed with Leukemia, starting a multiyear battle against the cancer. Julie and Tim were surrounded by so much love and service during this difficult time, and they have constantly sought to return the favor by reaching out to others in the most difficult and tender times of their lives. Julie always sought to brighten the world around her through kindness, laughter, service, delicious meals, listening ears, crocheted scrubbies, and by helping others feel the love of the Savior. She was a strength to so many, including her siblings, her children, her neighbors, her nieces and nephews, her friends, her young women, her ward, her stake, and to all who knew her. During her 12 years battling cancer, she constantly turned outward to serve and uplift others who were facing all manner of suffering and sadness. She never took down time for herself. She was often found messaging loved ones in the middle of the night, giving comfort, love, and peace. She never let her pain hold her back from being on the Lord's errand. She has inspired innumerable people who will continue to serve and love in the way she did. Julie is survived by her husband, Timothy Thurman, and her children: Tyler Thurman, Christopher Thurman, Michael (Carissa) Thurman, Danielle (Samuel) Martin, and Jackson Thurman. She is also survived by her only granddaughter, Jade Thurman, and by 10 of her 11 siblings, and their spouses: Gail (Carolyn) Paxton, Paul (Denece) Paxton, Sherry (Mike) Lyman, Linda (Bill) Livingston, Glenys (Jon) Perrero, Duane (Ann) Paxton, Fay (Bob) Pennock, Nan (Phil) Harrison, Jim (Lynda) Sheffield, and John (Alana) Sheffield. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ella and Erwin, and her sister and brother-in-law, Laurie and Dennis Brown. Julie will be buried at East Lawn Memorial Hills, 4800 North 650 East, Provo, Utah, 84601. A celebration of her life will be held at a future date when conditions permit.
