Obituary

Justin was the youngest of six children. He was raised in Orem, Utah in the home where his parents Lynn and Marilyn still reside. His siblings Wade, Amber, Jolyn, Jill and Jeremy welcomed him home. He grew into a man who cared how others felt and listened when people shared their stories. He loved and supported his wife, Beth. He prioritized his children, Rex and Ruby, taking pride in their growth and finding joy in their happiness. He was a supportive and active member of the family who called his mother every day. He is missed and loved deeply.

He fought for his life as a newborn and excelled in many areas of his life. He enjoyed many sports but excelled in wrestling. He was the 5A Utah State Wrestling Champ in 1998. He was an Eagle Scout and served as Student Body Vice President of Orem High School. At 19 he became fluent in Mandarin while serving a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan. He always loved seeing the Wasatch Front mountains outside his door and embraced opportunities for skiing and outdoor adventures.

Justin and Beth met in dental school and married in 2012, first settling in Brooklyn, NY and then Bethlehem, PA where they lived most recently with their two children Rex James (8) and Ruby Joanna (4). Their beautiful home was built during the Lincoln administration, filled with the sounds of laughter and imaginative play. In-process science and art projects were a regular fixture, evidence of his family centered life. Evenings after work were often spent with his children. He enjoyed playing games with Rex, dancing with Ruby and being a present, loving father and husband.

When Justin was 16, his older brother became paraplegic during their trip to Lake Powell. Justin cheerfully supported his first patient daily in those early months, sacrificing time with friends and sports, to help Jeremy create new routines and gain independence. He proudly referred to himself as Dr. Whiting during that period and even then his bedside manner was impeccable. After this early inspiration he eventually earned his D.D.S. and M.D. degrees specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He treated patients with competence and care and was universally loved by his team members.

Justin's family, friends, community, and colleagues are grieving the loss of a remarkable friend, brother, son, uncle, spouse, father, and colleague. Our hearts ache with the weight of his absence and the brevity of our time with him. We will cling to our memories of his humor, love, brilliance, and laughter.
