Katherine (Kay) T. Dorius
Katherine (Kay) T. Dorius Kay was born in New York City in 1927 to an Irish-American immigrant family. She was the middle child of three girls. They lost their parents at an early age and were raised by their loving Irish-born grandmother.
Kay met a small-town Utah boy, Keith, a Navy Pharmacist Mate who was stationed in New York City during WWII. He became the love of her life and they married in 1944. Together, they raised a family of three, and were married for 65 years.
She began her career working for Howard Hughes Aircraft but happily followed her passion and love of dogs to create a new career. Kay and Keith moved back to Keith's home state in 1972 and built, literally from the ground up, one of the first and largest boarding, grooming, breeding, and showing kennels in the State of Utah. Dorilane Kennels was her passion for 25 years.
Kay Dorius accomplished many things in her lifetime. In addition to raising three children and running a successful business, she was an award-winning, published poet. In 1996, her poem "It's Over Now," about the death of her father, earned her the Diamond Homer Trophy from the Famous Poets Society. She was also one of the first Women Democratic Delegates in the State of Utah.
One of her favorite claims to fame was her appearance, in the "Kissing the War Goodbye" WWII photograph. She loved to tell the story about being in the picture, along with many other tales of being a true Irish-American.
Kay was always very proud of her Irish Heritage and traveled back to Ireland any chance she could. She was the most loving and caring mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother — and was never afraid to give you her advice. They always said they broke the mold after her.
It's beyond a coincidence that her younger sister Jeri passed just hours before Kay. We know that they will always be together here and beyond.
She was proceeded in death by her older sister Ann, her sister Jeri, husband Keith, son Ronald, daughter Barbara, and great-grandson Jaisaac. She is survived by daughter Stacy (Rich) Simmons, Kay and Keith's foster children Alice and Duane, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family will be accepting donations to help support her favorite pet rescue or make a donation to your local or favorite shelter in Kay's name.
