Obituary

Kenneth Norman Cox Jr., "Norm" age 89, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home in Orem Utah, on December 16, 2021 surrounded by his loved ones. Norm was born in Provo, Utah to Kenneth Norman Cox Sr. and Mildred Morrison Cox on February 20, 1932. He attended schools in Provo and graduated from Provo High School. He continued his education through the GI Bill and obtained 2 years of Vocational Education. He married the love of his life, Ruby Gurr Duke, on September 27, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on September 27, 1962. Ruby passed away in 1987. Norm found love and companionship again with Joanna Hickman and they were happily married in the Provo Temple on August 3, 1996. Norm worked in the auto body collision repair business his whole adult life. During that time, he managed Ward's Auto Body Shop in Provo for 10 years. In 1976 he purchased the company and owned it for 16 years. After selling the shop, Norm worked at Christensen's Chevrolet in Provo. He then became a collision repair adjunct instructor at UVSC for 20 years where he taught 'First-Year Collision Repair with Hands on Experience' classes. Norm was cherished by his students. Many of his students kept in contact with him, and some even visited him at his home to work on car repairs. He never did retire, last month, he was found sitting in his wheelchair working on his beautiful 1962 Ford Galaxy Convertible. Norm loved working on and restoring vintage cars. In addition to his auto body career, Norm served in the Orem Police Reserves from the mid 1960's to the mid 1970's. He loved to help people, catch the bad guy, and patrol school dances to keep an eye on his own kids. He also volunteered as a ticket taker at the SCERA Theater in Orem so that all of his nine children could attend the movies for free. Norm served in the military for a time until his honorable discharge. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict from January 1955 to February 1957 where he was a heavy vehicle operator. Some of his other duties included driving an ambulance and cooking for his fellow service members. Norm had a passion for cooking and baking. He was famous for his homemade apple pies, raspberry jam, breaded steak and sourdough biscuits. Every Christmas, he spent countless hours baking apple pies from apples he grew on his own trees. One year it was believed he baked close to 150 pies. He would bake a few cherry pies for those cherry lovers. Then he would personally deliver the sweet pastries to his neighbors and friends. Anyone who needed help knew they could depend on Norm. His kind example and selfless service is a beautiful example to all who knew him. He often received phone calls in the middle of the night from distressed family members or friends and Norm always went to help regardless of the hour. On road trips, he would never pass a broken-down vehicle on the side of the road without stopping to lend a hand. Norm was a friend to everyone, and he was always helping those in need. Norm is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he held many callings including Bishopric Counselor, Sunday School Presidency, Scout Master and many years in various callings serving with the Elder's and the church's youth groups. He was always the ward campout cook and everyone loved his famous stew. His most accomplished calling was that as a Home Teacher/Ministering Brother. He did this vigilantly and the families under his charge knew of his love for them. He served faithfully his entire life. At 80 years old, he even helped haul equipment and set up the Ward's young women's camp. Norm had a strong testimony of the Gospel and shared it often with those around him. Norm's greatest joy was his family. Some of his happiest times were taking his family deer hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, and snowmobiling. He loved to play the card game Rook and he really loved to win. With his family by his side, Norm built a log cabin in Duck Creek Village, in southern Utah, a refuge that has served as the meeting place for family gatherings for the past 40 years. Out of all the nicknames Norm had, Big Papa, the name his great-grandchildren called him, was his favorite. He is preceded in death by his eternal companion, Ruby Cox, his son Ron Cox, and his sister Mary Haglund. He is survived by 3 siblings LaVar Cox, Genevieve Lapsley and Joyce Page, his loving wife, Joanna Hickman Cox; his children (Ladean) Cox, Lynette (Gary) Nelsen, Cindy (Steve) Sorensen, Cassie (Steve) Every, Lisa (Brent) Safely, Dana (Gina) Cox, Jessie (Richard) Peel, Jason (Cyndi) Cox, and Stacy Cox; 34 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. Joanna's children: Heather Wood, Jessica Hickman, Jennifer (Theron) Miskin, Christopher Hickman, Brock (Kristen) Hickman, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
