Obituary

On Friday, November 5th, 2021, Kenneth Allen Solen, beloved father, husband, and Grandfather passed from this mortal realm at the age of 74.

Ken, the second son of three boys, was born in Sonoma, California, on February, 1, 1947, to Ruth and Morris Solen. He developed a love for animals early in life and spent much of his boyhood years running through local orchards, faithful dog at his heels. He graduated high school at the age of 17, obtained a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Berkley at age 21, and completed his masters In Physiology and doctorate in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He went on to do postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Iowa Medical School and Oregon Health Sciences Center.

Though his scholarly success was notable, Ken's crowning achievement was marrying Linda Buelow on January 30, 1971. A year later, several young men and women knocked on their door, invited them to listen to some missionaries, and the trajectory of their lives was forever changed. Many wonderful experiences followed their baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but the most miraculous blessing was the arrival of four rambunctious children a few years after being told they were barren.

Becoming a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints took the Solen family on an unexpected path to BYU where Ken began his professorship. After 37 years, innumerable lives changed, and countless teaching awards, he retired and dedicated his life to serving in the church, once as a Transitional Living missionary and twice as a missionary with his wife Linda in the Pathways Education Program. He also developed a passion for genealogy and was instrumental in helping others pursue their own family histories. His mortal life was one of service, and we know he continues this work in the life hereafter.

He is survived by his wife Linda and their four children: Sarah (Pace), Daniel (Miriam), Aaron (Anh), and Stephen (Kaetty), nine beautiful and brilliant grandchildren, and his brothers Larry (Shirley) and Gary (Debby).

You are loved Kiddo/Dad//Grandpa and we will miss you!
