Our beloved and treasured Kevin W Field quietly and bravely completed his earthly journey
March 2, 2023. Our valiant, lionhearted warrior faced an extremely rare and aggressive form
of cancer. Kevin's ferocious will to live and his acceptance of this unrelenting challenge
demonstrated a level of courage and strength unlike any other we've known. Even through his
most difficult of times, Kevin showed unparalleled fearlessness, tenacity, and resilience
defying the odds.
Kevin came into this world on an adventure. He was born February 10, 1969, in Anaheim
California. From the very beginning, he truly loved life. He was naturally athletic and gifted
at anything he set out to do. He was an excellent golfer, a wicked mountain biker, a strong
and gifted runner, and a fierce extreme skier. He was at home on the water whether he was
skiing, paddle boarding, or diving. He was fun to be around because his only real competition
was himself. You always knew you would have a good time when you were hanging with Kev.
Kevin was a mischievous and playful young boy who would set out on his bike and reveled in
the sense of fun and freedom it gave him. He excelled at school and would often get in a
little trouble because he would finish his work early and find something else to occupy his
bright little mind - much to the dismay of some of his teachers.
He loved spending time with his family camping, biking, and skiing at Snowbird. Many of his
fond memories were centered on time with those he loved and activities in nature. He was
very involved in BMX racing and went to countless different races with his dad and brother. He
loved motorcycles. He was a sweet but tough kid. Bumps, bruises, and broken bones were not
going to stop his adventure.
Kevin was a member of the first graduating class at the Waterford School in Provo, Utah
where he was a superior student. He was a leader on the soccer team and participated in
many other athletics.
Kevin completed many academic achievements including attending Dixie College, the
University of Utah, Idaho State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Finally, he earned a Master of Science Nursing in Anesthesia from Newman University in
Wichita, Kansas where he graduated in the top of his class.
He met the love of his life in a little flower shop in Salt Lake City Utah. It was a story of love
at first sight, a reunion of their two souls, and they became inseparable. They married on
August 1, 1992, just a year and a half later. They married in a beautiful park at the base of
Emigration Canyon. Because of their shared desire to live and experience both the length and
the breadth of this lifetime they went on to fulfill many hopes and dreams during their 30
years together on this earth.
Kevin and Jennifer's free spirits took them all over the world, eventually calling them to the
Big Island of Hawai'i. Together they share a deep love for the 'aina, its beauty and mana.
Kevin had a special love for the soulful sounds of slack key guitar. He could build anything and
fix everything. He and Jen created many beautiful spaces together. Truly, they were each
other's yin and yang.
Another beautiful highlight of Kevin's life was how children and dogs gravitated towards him
and his radiant personality. Kevin and Jennifer raised three beautiful dogs together and they
were a joyful part of their shared adventures. Kevin was also a loving, caring uncle.
During his time on the island, Kevin was a vital member of the surgical team providing
anesthesia at North Hawaii Community Hospital where he served the community for nearly
ten years. Prior to making the big leap to Hawai'i, he practiced at Asante Three Rivers
Medical Center in Grants Pass Oregon, Group Health and Virginia Mason in Seattle Washington,
Harrison Medical Center and Naval Hospital in Bremerton Washington, and the VA Medical
Center in Salt Lake City Utah. Throughout his career he made many friends and was so
respected for his integrity and how he treated his patients and colleagues. He was an astute
clinician who was described as one who possessed the rare combination of kindness,
compassion, and competency. Kevin held himself to an extraordinary high standard in all he
did, and it showed. A patient educator, he taught and mentored many CRNAs that were
entering the field. He generously gave of himself in his quiet way. He inspired us all to bring
our best and to be our best.
He was incredibly intelligent and extremely humble. He deserved accolades but never sought
them. He is our hero. We nicknamed him Kevlar because he was bulletproof, nothing could
stop him. He was the one who we always called upon to handle tough situations when
everything else failed. Strong and agile, he moved through the world with enviable grace.
He was loyal and committed to his family and friends. He was our go to. He was the wind
under us and a grounding stability in our lives. He always encouraged us to take the
challenges bit by bit. Even through the tremendous suffering he endured, he was a valiant
warrior always reassuring us it would get better. He just kept going no matter what life threw
at him. The inadequacies in his medical care were a cruel irony but he and Jennifer
dauntlessly sought out every possible option for his treatment to the very end.
He is a beautiful, rare soul; and is very loved.
Kevin is lovingly remembered by his wife Jennifer Field and devoted labradoodle Kai; parents
Vic (Sandy) Field, Betty (Dave) Hull, sister Stacy Brereton, brothers Shawn (Autumn) Field,
and Chris (in-law) (Jen) Coombs. Kevin has reunited with his beloved labradors Sunny and
Jujube along with his Mother and Father-in-law Davi and Morgan Coombs.
Kevin and Jennifer would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to their 'ohana, Rebecca
(Ken) O'Boyle and Jennifer (Chris) Coombs for their care with Kai during their many times off
island for treatment.
A memorial and celebration of Kevin's life will be held at a later date to be announced.
