Obituary

On Sunday, March 18, 2018, Dr. Kirby Malcolm McMaster, husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away at the age of 75. Kirby was born April 11, 1942 to Douglas and Jeanette McMaster in Ross, California.  He moved to Orem, Utah at age 11 and played basketball for Orem High School and Brigham Young University. He served a mission in New Zealand for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the people of New Zealand and returned there to play for the New Zealand National Basketball team. He married the love of his life, Betty Anne Freeman, on November 24, 1973 in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. They are the parents of five children. Kirby was a professor and loved education. He received advanced degrees and taught in multiple curriculums over five decades including Statistics, Math, Accounting, and Computer Science at universities across the country. Some of the institutions he taught at include Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and Fort Lewis College in Colorado, as well as colleges in California, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Hawaii, and New Zealand. Even after retiring from teaching in 2014, Kirby continued to do research and publish papers to contribute to the field of education and encourage the future generation of STEM teachers. Kirby's children and grandchildren were his whole world. He loved nothing more than watching them excel in school and other activities. He loved talking to his children about their lives and careers and hearing about his grandchildren's many talents and activities. He was passionate about being involved in their lives and was always advocating for them to further their education. Kirby is survived by his wife, Betty; his children Ashley (Todd) Blake, Trevor (Michelle) McMaster, Devon (Milt) Linn, and Adrien McMaster; his grandchildren McLain, McKinley, Aubrey, Grant, Kennedy, Maddox, James and Charlotte; and his brother Bruce (Beverly) McMaster. He was preceded in death by his son, Colin, his sister, Heather, and by his parents. The family will receive guests at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home on Friday, March 23, from 11:00 to 12:30 pm. A service will be held following the viewing at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at Orem Cemetery.
