Obituary

LaVar M Richman, age 93, passed away at his home in Orem, Utah on March 24th at 9:40 am, surrounded by family members.

On May 2, 1929, Roy and Flora (Myler) Richman welcomed their 2nd boy, LaVar to their home. He was born at home in a little house on the farm in Cornish, Utah. He was delivered by a doctor who made house calls.

During his early years, LaVar lived and worked on the family farm, where he developed a love for horses. LaVar also milked many cows on the dairy. After milking cows, LaVar couldn't bring himself to drink milk anymore.

In 1949, LaVar went on an LDS mission to Australia. After his mission, a special draft was held, and LaVar became a United States Marine. He was proud to be a marine. Whenever the marine song was played at home, LaVar would stand at attention and sing the song. When home on leave at a basketball game, he met the love of his life, Sharon Holt.

LaVar and Sharon began dating and were married in the Logan LDS Temple on June 16, 1955. LaVar attended Utah State University and received a BS Degree in Agriculture Economics in 1958. In 1961, he received his Masters degree in the same field. LaVar had a loyalty to Utah State and would frequently stand up and sing the fight song while stomping his foot. However, he also had to cheer for another school, after all four kids graduated from BYU.

After college, LaVar worked as a county agent in Kanab, Utah. Shortly after that, LaVar got a job as an economist for the Bureau of Reclamation, where he had a long and successful career. The job required several moves with the family throughout the Western states, Nevada, Colorado, Washington with the last move to Orem, Utah where LaVar retired.

LaVar was involved in the LDS church his entire life. He served in many callings such as: Bishop, Scoutmaster, High Council, Temple worker and others. In addition to his many church callings, he was involved in the scouting program for most of his adult life. He attended the scouting training program called Wood badge. After attending the course, LaVar, at home would break out in the Wood Badge song. Later, LaVar became an instructor for the course. He helped several young men earn the eagle scout award. In 1982, LaVar won the highest award for scout leaders called the Silver Beaver award.

LaVar loved his wife, kids, in laws, grandkids, great grandkids. He had four kids, 15 grandkids, and 17 great grandkids.

LaVar is survived by his wife Sharon, his four kids: Burke (Ann) Richman of Kimberly, Idaho, Brian (Andrea) Richman of Centerville, Utah, RaDawn (Dale) Anderson of Provo, Utah, Bart (Leslie) Richman of Orem, Utah : his brother Glen (Barbara) Richman of Salt Lake, and his sister Pat Harris of Farmington.
