Obituary

Leland H. Howell

March 28 1935 - August 10, 2023

Leland H. Howell of Orem, Utah passed away on August 10th, 2023 at the age of 88 from complications of post-polio syndrome. Leland was born March 28, 1935 in Preston, Idaho to Earl Bingham and Lillian Henderson Howell, the 7th of 8 children. He spent his early childhood and teenage years in Clifton Idaho where he excelled at football, baseball, and basketball. During the fall of 1952 he contracted polio and spent several months in the hospital. Despite his illness, he graduated with his senior class of West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho in 1953.

He went on to attend Weber college for two years, and then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1955-1957 in the Central Atlantic States Mission. Upon returning, he enrolled at BYU and completed a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, graduating magna cum laude in 1959.

Leland married Barbara Ann Hunter on June 9, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Ogden, Utah for four years where Leland taught seminary at Ogden and Weber High Schools. In 1963 they moved to Provo where he completed a master's degree in Accounting in 1964.

After graduation, Leland and Barbara moved their family to Orem, Utah, where he became a partner with his friend and former mission companion, DeRae Broderick. Together, they formed the Broderick and Howell Construction company which built over 200 LDS Chapels, as well as many schools and other commercial buildings.

Leland was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ and served in many callings including Bishop, Stake President, and Stake Patriarch. He loved those he served, and he was beloved for his soft-spoken manner, gentle humor, and confidence in others. He especially loved working with the youth.

Leland is survived by his wife, Barbara; their six children: Barry (Barbara) Howell, Debra (Steve) Spencer, Douglas (Adonia) Howell, Brenda (Jeffery) Reynolds, Andrea Howell (Keyvan Mashayekhi), and Susan (Dan) Lott; 20 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Don Howell, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Horizon Hospice, and Legacy Village of Provo for the excellent care they provided to Leland during the last months of his life. We also wish to thank the Sunset Heights 2nd Ward for their many kindnesses to Leland and Barbara over many years.
