Obituary

Lena Mae Samples Bybee 1929-2017 Lena Mae Samples Bybee, 88, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 4, 2017. She was born in Lubbock, TX on June 24, 1929 to Evertt Lee Samples and Rena Mae Hallman Samples. Lena graduated from Southland High School in Texas on May 16, 1947 and was a member of the basketball team. She loved sports and was an avid Utah Jazz fan recording the scores of each game. She worked for the telephone company and was one of the first switchboard operators in Slaton, TX. She married John Bascom Bybee on March 8, 1952. They were later divorced. Lena moved to California in 1961 continuing to work for the telephone company. She then worked the majority of her career for First Interstate Mortgage in Pasadena, CA working her way up to Assistant Vice President of Loan Administration. She then moved to Maryland working in the mortgage loan business until her retirement. She married Charles Hall, Sr. on May 27, 1994. They were later divorced. She was an amazing single mother who raised two children working two jobs at times to make ends meet. She loved her children and taught them to believe in God and to pray. She was affectionately known as "Mammaw" to all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lena is survived by her two children: Shauna Novotny, Arcadia, CA and Royce (Pam) Bybee, Orem, UT; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren - soon to be 11. Lena is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Joretta McElfresh, and brother Edward Samples. We would like to thank Osmond Senior Living and all the CNAs for their loving care. Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 14, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home on 646 East 800 North, Orem, UT. There will be a viewing for family and friends prior to services from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem, UT.
