Linda Gay Utley Cowburn, 74 of Orem, Utah, passed away on February 24th at 7:11 PM with all of her children surrounding her, her grandchildren down the hall on their knees, holding hands while they prayed for their Heavenly Father to help her feel safe and to go to the light with Grandpa.
Linda was born on May 4, 1947 in Richfield Utah to Scott and Cleo Utley. She is the eldest of four children. Being the oldest she was like a second mother to her brothers and sister. She cherished her relationship with her 3 siblings, Colleen Madden (Ted), Duane Utley (Vicky), and Dan Utley (Trisha). She attended Richfield High School.
Linda married her first husband Rodney Winkel on February 21,1964. They had Linda's two oldest daughters together and were later divorced. Linda then married her eternal companion, Marty Cowburn, on May 7, 1971, after only dating for 13 days! Later they were sealed for time and all eternity in the American Fork Temple. They were a family of yours, mine, and ours but only thought of each other as family. Together they have 6 children; Wendy (Dave) Flygare, American Fork, UT, Laurie (Ken) Burrows, Orem, UT, Tad (Megan) Ruggles, Homeland, CA, Kristen (Steve) Ruth, Orem, UT, Karly Johnson, Orem, UT, Kassie (Matt) Whipple, Eagle Mountain, UT, and foster daughter Sandi Shondee, Tempe, AZ. Linda and Marty were married for almost 51 years before Marty passed away just a few weeks ago. She just didn't want to live without her Mart.
Linda and Marty owned several hair salons throughout the years. Nearly 30 years ago Linda was approached to do hair for the movie "Porter Rockwell." The lead actor had to have long hair for certain scenes and short hair for other scenes of the movie. He asked Linda to come up with a way for him to have long hair fastened to his head but be able to remove it when needed. This is how Linda's expertise on hair extensions began which evolved into her own unique method. She spent the rest of her life running her salon in her home along side her husband, creating beauty and friendships day in and day out. Not only was Linda a very talented cosmetologist she also was a dose of unconditional love for every one of her clients, friends, and family. You could probably call her salon chair a confessional, but no matter what you told Linda you knew she would not judge you but only love you because she was truly the most christlike "earth angel." Linda spent every free moment with her family. Her and Marty loved Lake Powell and spent their summers there with their children and grandchildren building sand castles and exploring the canyons. She loved having her family over for dinner and their home had an ever revolving door where all were welcome and loved as they were. Linda gave to others every chance she had and lived her life as true example of christ. Unconditional love is not an active emotion but rather a state of being, and it explains Linda's life and legacy perfectly. May we all be better people and "Live like Linda."
Linda was proceeded in death by her loving husband Martin Henry Cowburn, and her parents Scott and Cleo Utley.
