Obituary

Linnie Emily Stevens, 94, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of her daughter in law, Maurine Stevens,  at the home of her son, Cal Stevens, in Liberty, Utah.  She achieved her wish to be at home in her own bedroom surrounded by her family as she left this mortal life.  She was a long time resident of Orem, Utah but moved in with her son and daughter in law Maurine, a year and a half ago due to illness and age. She was born July 9, 1923 in a log house near American Falls Idaho to William Harmon Adkins and Linnie Lee Pennington Adkins.  She was the eighth of twelve children, eight sisters and three brothers.   She married the love of her life, Calvin James Stevens August 17, 1943 in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple.  Linnie had difficulty in pregnancy but was blessed with one son, Cal and a daughter, Gail, who died five and a half hours after her birth in 1951.  Our country was at war in WWII when Linnie graduated from high school.  Because of a lack of men, due to the war, the railroad needed telegraph operators.   Linnie went to school to learn telegraphy and went to work for the railroad. One of the places the railroad sent Linnie was Kemmerer Wyoming.  Calvin was also a railroad telegraph operator working at the opposite end of Kemmerer from where Linnie was working.  They met each other and made their first date over the telegraph.   Now after nearly 75 years of a great marriage, they have had to separate for a short time until they can once again be reunited for eternity. Linnie was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a long time member of the Orem Suncrest 1st Ward before moving to Liberty.  She served in many positions in the church and had served as an Ordinance Worker in the American Fork Temple. Linnie started work with Sears Roebuck and Co in Salt Lake City, Utah. She later transferred to the Provo, Utah store when Calvin Started his own barber shop in Provo.  She worked in many varied types of positions there until her retirement after 34 years of service.  She always worked the Saturday shifts so that she could have Monday off to be able to spend her time with Calvin when he was free. Calvin joined the military in 1943 during WWII and went into the Army Air Corps.  He was trained as an Aerial gunner on a B-17 bomber and assigned to the ball turret position.  Prior to deployment to Europe, Calvin and Linnie lived in Dyersberg Tennessee where Calvin went to Aerial Gunnery School.  After Calvin returned from the war but was still in the military, Linnie and Calvin lived in a little 16 foot trailer in Santa Monica California, Laredo Texas, Heman Oklahoma and Ft Myers, Florida.  Calvin and Linnie endured many hardships during this period of time just so they could continue to be together.  This would be a pattern for the rest of their lives.  They always put their marriage and family first and did everything they could to be together in whatever they did. While pregnant with their son Cal in 1946 – 1947, Linnie stayed in bed without getting out of it for 5 ½ months so that she would not loose their baby. In 1951 while living in Salt Lake City, Utah, Linnie was pregnant with their daughter, Gail, and threatening a miscarriage.  They called their Bishop, Thomas S. Monson, for a Priesthood Blessing.  He and Calvin gave her that  blessing and the promise was made that her testimony would be "strengthened through this experience".  Their baby daughter lived long enough to receive and name and a blessing but was not able to survive.  As promised in her blessing however,  Linnie did gain an even stronger testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and maintained an unwavering faith in her savior, throughout the rest of her life. Linnie was always an avid gardener and loved to work in her yard around her home.  She loved to grow beautiful flowers and great tasting vegetables, especially tomatoes.  She and Calvin loved to travel in their various camp outfits and enjoy the beauties of God's creation.  She and Calvin spent many wonderful days together and with Cal and Maurine and their family enjoyed many great adventures together. Linnie was a gifted seamstress and loved to sew, knit and crochet what have now become family heirlooms. Linnie was much loved by many people.  She loved her family, her neighbors and her friends.  She was a gentile soul who tried to make everyone's life a better and happier place and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Linnie was proceeded in in death by her parents, eleven siblings, a daughter, and a granddaughter.         She is survived by her husband, Calvin Stevens, her son Cal Stevens, her daughter in law, Maurine Stevens, 3 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 11:00 am at the Liberty Ward Chapel, 4279 N., 3300 E., Liberty, Utah.  Friends may visit with the family Tuesday May 29, 2018 at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 N., Orem, Utah  from 5:00 – 6:30 pm or at the Liberty Ward Chapel, 4279 N. 3300 E., Liberty, Utah  from 10:00 -10:45 am May 30, 2018.
