IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lionel Paul
Crowley
January 27, 1934 – December 11, 2025
Lionel Paul Crowley, 91, of Orem, Utah, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 11, 2025 due to congestive heart failure. The second of five sons, he was born January 27, 1934, to Byron Crowley and Elda (Olson) Crowley in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Lionel married Marie Gish on August 8, 1953 in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple for time and all eternity, after which they started and raised their family in Southern California. In 1975 they moved from their long-time home of Crestline, California to Provo, Utah. At that time he started going by his middle name of Paul, which is how his Utah friends came to know him. L. Paul and Marie lived in the Provo-Orem area for over 50 years, thoroughly enjoying their posterity together through 64 years of marriage before Marie's passing in 2017. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life. Some favorites were teaching early morning Seminary in Lake Arrowhead, CA, and serving multiple Stake Missions, where he was bold and fearless in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through those years he was involved in teaching and baptizing many wonderful people. Later in life, he also enjoyed serving as an Ordinance Worker in the Temple and attending faithfully until a month before his passing.
Lionel's family moved to California early in his childhood, residing in San Luis Obispo, Walnut Creek, Antioch, and Ontario. At 10 years old, during a difficult time in his parents' marriage, he and his older brother were sent to live with their Olson Grandparents in Ucon, Idaho. Even at that young age, he was a hard-working farm hand and loved helping with the horses, cows, and other chores. That work ethic became a hallmark of his life, and he was known for boundless energy on very little sleep and the confidence to accomplish any task. He was a gifted athlete and loved competition. His strength, speed, and quickness were legendary; whether it was track, basketball, or beach football, he was always "game for a game." He was a star basketball player on his high school and Jr College teams, continuing to shoot hoops until he was 75 years old. Lionel loved school and was exceptionally bright, graduating from BYU with a Chemical Engineering degree. Together, he and Marie navigated life as entrepreneurs, purchasing a Cable TV company in the San Bernardino mountains in the early 60s, pioneering in the new industry and building a successful business. They raised their six children in Crestline, CA, with extended family living nearby. The years in the mountains were a magical time, the name of the community literally being called "Valley of Enchantment." They filled their time with family, sports, and regular trips to Newport Beach. Everyone was welcomed as family in Lionel & Marie's home, including pets of all kinds – horses, dogs, cats, geese, chickens and chinchillas, to name a few – and it was a frequent gathering place for great food, music, & laughter. Lionel was a bonafide foodie, a passion he passed on to his posterity. Cooking amazing meals was one of his super-powers, and many people have enjoyed his culinary skills. After moving back to Provo, he became licensed as a Real Estate and Stock Broker, working many successful years in both industries. More recently, many recognized him as "Grandpa Paul" of O'Crowley Irish Tacos, a fan favorite at BYU events. A unique sport he pursued for over 60 years (off and on) was Pigeon Racing, and besides the fun memories involving his children, grandchildren, and lots of baby birds, he had many winning pigeons bringing home trophies. L. Paul loved fishing, body surfing, writing poetry, supporting conservative political causes and cheering for his BYU Cougars! He was well known for telling his "Dad Jokes", and loved to make people laugh. Although he experienced significant memory loss for names, faces & events in later years, he maintained his memory for jokes up to the end. "Grandpa Paul Pun-ster" loved delivering punny punchlines, including winning an award for his Orem's Got Talent stand-up routine & auditioning for America's Got Talent in California. Family, friends and strangers alike will miss his friendly, positive nature and the smiles he brought.
Lionel Paul's family was his pride and joy and he loved to spend time together. He is survived by his children; Steven (Nancy) Crowley of Provo UT, Loriann (David) Gabrielsen of Draper UT, Scott (Ann) Crowley of Orem UT, Teresa (Ed) Kocherhans of Orem UT, Leslie (Lawrence) Packer of Lindon UT, and Julie (Jace) Chan of Draper, UT, as well as 42 grandchildren, 92 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and his youngest brother, Jared Crowley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, his parents, three of his siblings, one grandson, two great-grandsons, and many beloved dogs, cats, and pigeons.
