IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Loraine Esther
Black
September 26, 1924 – November 2, 2021
Loraine Esther Walker Black, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 2, 2021 in Provo, Utah. She was born on September 26, 1924 to parents, William and Leone Walker, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the oldest of four children. Because her father was a mining engineer, Loraine had a unique and interesting childhood growing up in the mining towns of Dividend and Park City, Utah, and Cherry Creek and Ely, Nevada. She moved to Ely during her high school years.
It was during her senior year in high school, that she met the love of her life, Clair Black, from Spanish Fork, Utah. After high school, she attended Utah State University. Clair was drafted into the army and they later were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 23, 1943. While Clair was overseas fighting in WWII, Loraine lived with her parents in Ely and gave birth to their son Dennis. After returning home from the war, Clair and Loraine moved to Provo, Utah, where Clair finished his education at BYU. They then settled in Ely, where Julie Ann was born. While living in Ely, Loraine taught in the elementary schools.
They lived in Ely for fifteen years and then moved to Napa, California. Both loved living in Napa. During their thirty-five years there, Loraine was very active in the community, volunteering at the Queen of the Valley Hospital and serving in the Symphony League.
She was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many prominent and important positions. She also was an ordinance worker in the Oakland and Mount Timpanogos Temples. After Clair retired, a highlight of their life was being called on a mission to Nauvoo, Illinois where they met some of their best friends.
After their Nauvoo mission, she and Clair moved to Orem, Utah, where they could be close to their son, Dennis and his family. Clair preceded her in death a few years after moving to Orem. Loraine loved volunteering, traveling, collecting bears, gardening, sewing, counted cross stitch, and serving others.
Of all the positions Loraine held, her favorite and foremost was that of being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She always used all of her energy in serving her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Leone Walker; brother, William Walker, sister Janice Walker Gottfredson; husband, Clair Brox Black, and three great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, Melvin (Illene); son, Dennis (Margaret); daughter, Julie Johnston (Bob); grandchildren, Kerri Madsen (Paul), Brian Black (Le Anne), David Black (Jaclyn), Steven Black (Amber), Michael Black (Jana), Emily Conkey (Don), Jennifer Gutierrez (Dan), Rob Johnston (Meghan), Michelle Shoemaker (Tim), and thirty-three great grandchildren.
The family gives special thanks to Loraine's caregivers at Health Watch Home Health and Hospice and to the wonderful staff at Jamestown Assisted Living.
Her funeral will be held Monday, November 8, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Canyon View 2nd Ward Chapel 1090 North 400 East, Orem, Utah, with a visitation preceding the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A visitation will also be held Sunday evening, November 7th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem.
