Obituary

Lorin Dale Leavitt, 71, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends, in Orem, Utah, after a hard-fought 3-year battle with cancer. Born to Lynn and Eloise Leavitt, in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 22, 1948, Lorin was the second of 6 children, all sons. Lorin's older brother, Marlin Cary, died at age 15 months before Lorin was born. Lorin's surviving brothers include Mitchel Ray (Janet Olsen), Gary Lynn, Ronald Kay (Susan Wallace), and Dennis H. (Nykele Gagon). Lorin's father married Starr Falzone, from whom Lorin acquired two sisters who also survive him, Becky Ivatt (Robert) and Wendy Keefe. Lorin was not a stranger to hard work. At age 14, his first summer job was at a car wash in Las Vegas. His responsibility was to crawl into the back seat of blazing hot cars and wash the inside back windows. At age 16, he secured a new job as a tram driver at the Dunes Hotel, which then led to his career in valet parking. Lorin was always full of stories of the trade. He was so fun to be around and was always pulling pranks. A naturally gifted storyteller, he regularly had his listeners in fits as he wove a tapestry of humorous (and even sometimes shocking) tales of his experiences. While this skill endeared Lorin to many, other listeners still question the truthfulness of the storylines! He will be sorely missed for bringing humor into the lives of those who knew him. Lorin attended BYU Hawaii in 1966. He then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New York, Cumorah Mission and returned and served his country in the National Guard. Lorin married JoAnne Burgess on October 16, 1969 and had two children, Jamie Lynn and Daniel Chase. Lorin married Maureen Sprague August 7, 1982. On his third try, he married Dianne Williams Sharp on February 19, 2005 and on December, 9, 2014, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. When Dianne and Lorin were together, they chose to create the environment necessary to grow, learn, and become what they were meant to become with the Lord. This new-found safety and purpose in both of their lives brought healing to their family and extended family. Lorin quickly became an adored and model father to Dianne's children, Andrew (Candace), Adam (Shalene), Connor, and Dylan. Lorin taught us all what a loving husband and father looks like. He loved each of his children and showed this in all that he did. Lorin's legacy is that this blended family, although very different in age, distance, and experience, has chosen to become a unified, loving, and loyal family that honors their similarities and respects their differences. Each child and grandchild have contributed to this beautiful tapestry of love and it is beautiful to behold. Lorin was smart and charismatic. He was a sharp dresser, and his hair was always perfect. A successful entrepreneur and businessman, Lorin had a magnetism that drew everyone in. Lorin was a true leader. Although he was certain about many things in his life and had an uncanny ability to recall specific things with dead-on accuracy, when asked the number of cars he purchased over his lifetime, that number somehow escaped his memory and remains completely unknown to us all-even his brothers. Yes, he truly was a car lover! He was also a food aficionado. He mostly enjoyed high quality cuisine like hot dogs and pizza. He loved to read and to play cards and Acey-Deucy. He especially loved going to Hilton Head with his family and loved ones. He loved golfing. He was quick-witted in all situations. He loved being with friends, his brothers and above all, with Dianne. Lorin affectionately called Dianne "The Warden" because when he was diagnosed, she set new rules and strict guidelines regarding lifestyle and food choices in order to preserve his life–basically, no meat, dairy, or sugar. She tried everything possible to help Lorin heal. Although he appeared to follow these new guidelines precisely, to Dianne's dismay, she has discovered this past week that Lorin's many "trips to the car wash", and "trips to the bank" were really code for "trips to sneak a delicious treat"! Regarding his strict food regime, he quipped, "You don't live longer, it just FEELS like you do!" Not only has Dianne discovered he secretly grabbed snacks from time to time, but that he also forced his friends who caught him in the act to make a blood oath of silence: "Don't tell the Warden!" Lorin's real spiritual education began in 2013 when he became a temple ordinance worker, where he loved to serve. Later, in 2018, Lorin was called to the high council where he was mentored and tutored by his heros in the stake presidency. In Lorin's last years of his life, he devoted himself solely to truth and to his Savior, Jesus Christ. Thinking back, Dianne always thought she and Lorin were trying to heal his physical body these past three years. She now understands that Lorin was actively working to heal and sanctify his spirit. He was preparing to meet his Savior. The last hours of Lorin's life confirmed this sacred truth. In those hours, Lorin's spirit and body were doing the final work to prepare for exaltation. When his final work was complete and his final stages of refining were accomplished, those surrounding Lorin witnessed the beauty of his valian0t soul leave this earth to greet the Savior himself and report. Lorin did it! And we are so proud of him. Lorin is survived by his wife, Dianne, and all his children who will miss him but are choosing to climb as he did so they can all live with him and our Savior Jesus Christ again. With deepest thanks and gratitude to Kimberly Rash and Lucia Hullinger, gifted healers and women of God, who helped us battle Lorin's disease.
