Lyndella (Lindy) McLaws Bryant
May 29, 1930 -- April 17, 2020
Lindy McLaws was born in Phoenix, Arizona to Franklin and Marion McLaws on May 29, 1930. She was the oldest child in a family of three, Larry and Monte following after her. Her father was a photographer and stonemason. His work took them many places as they lived during the Great Depression and it was often hard finding work. They lived in Mesa, Arizona, sometimes in California, but mostly in Holbrook, Arizona on the McLaws ranch. Her memories include swimming in the family-dug swimming pool, gardening with her mother, helping and watching her mom can hundreds of quarts of fruits and vegetables, and playing with the many McLaws cousins. She remembers walking home from school on the old dusty dirt road and playing with her little brothers. Her family, at one time, lived in a tent in Mesa, Arizona during the summer so her father could find employment.
In 1944, following her parent's divorce the year before, Lindy moved to Flagstaff, Arizona to live with her mother and go to school there. She became a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. She met her future husband in High School. He was getting ready to leave for the Navy during WW II. He finished boot camp and was headed for the Pacific War front when Japan surrendered to the Americans. His ship continued on to help in clean up from the war in China.
Lindy, was an American Airlines flight attendant, better known in those days as a stewardess. She flew out of Chicago to all areas of the United States in 1951-1952. She returned to Flagstaff to marry Ian Bryant in the summer of 1952. She had to resign from the Airlines because you couldn't be married and work at the same time.
She and Ian wed on August 3, 1952 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Children followed, Debora Lynn (1953), Stephanie Ann (1955) and Barry Ian (1958). The Bryant's moved to Inglewood, California in 1954 and lived there for nearly two years, then moved to Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation. They lived there for 14 years at which time Lindy worked as the secretary to the Superintendent of Public Schools. Lake Powell was only an hour away so many weekends were spent on boats of one kind or another. Lindy could water ski for hours at a time.
In 1970, the Bryant's moved to Flagstaff, with new employment opportunities. They worked, sent Debbie and Barry on missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and all three children to college.
Lindy worked in the County Treasurer's Office. She also began water color painting with a group of wonderful friends that bonded them to each other for life. She painted so well that several of her paintings were sold after being entered into art shows. She did a lot of genealogy work on Ian's side finding many of the Bryant and McKechine lines.
In 1989, she and Ian moved to Chandler, Arizona where they pursued the retirement years and dreams. They traveled around the western USA in a motor home, went to Hawaii many times, traveled to Scotland and England, as well as Portugal. She also traveled with her brother, Monte and sister-in-law, Emily to Israel. She loved being closer to her brother, Larry and his family as well as Barry and Taffy who lived close to where they settled.
In 2004, seeking a change of scenery she and Ian moved to Ivins, Utah, west of St. George. They bought a home and enjoyed the neighborhood immensely. In 2007, her sweetheart decided to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their family was then sealed in the St. George temple in 2008. Lindy also worked in the temple once a week. They traveled to Jerusalem with family and ward members.
Sadly, Ian passed away on June 10, 2009. A year later Lindy moved to Orem, Utah to live with her oldest daughter, Debbie.
In 2015, Lindy moved to Courtyard at Jamestown an assisted living center in Provo, Utah. She made many wonderful friends there and continued to serve and love those around her. She always made friends easily. She could be seen collecting leaves all around the center. She pressed them in books in her apartment.
She passed away on April 17, 2020 quickly and peacefully. She was just 6 weeks short of her 90th birthday.
She is survived by her three children Debbie (Richard) Wilson, Stephanie Dangerfield, and Barry (Amber) Bryant, two sister-in-laws, Sonja McLaws and Emily Despain. She has seven half brothers and sisters, Frank, Otis, David, Caroline, Kathy, Gail, and Maylene. She has 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery. Condolences may be offered and memories shared with the family online at www.walkersanderson.com.
