Obituary

Mable Josephine Foster McGee, age 92, passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 26th, 2024 at the Bel Aire Care Facility in American Fork, Utah, where she had recently moved from Elk Grove, California. (She loved Christmas and had many nativities she collected, so it was fitting that she waited until after Christmas.) She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her husband, Jack Aldwin McGee, had passed previously on November 3, 2003, and her youngest son and daughter-in-law prepared their home for her and she lived with them until July 2024 when she moved to Utah and was able to have time with her son Randel and his wife Marsha.

She was born in Middletown, Ohio, on September 4, 1932, the youngest of at least 14 siblings who proceeded her in death. Only eight of them lived to adulthood: Solomon, Catherine, Wesley, Ruth, Gertrude, Dallas, Daisy and Clara. Her parents, Samuel Benjamin Foster and Grace Mae Hill, were invalids and were living with their oldest son, Solomon, when she was born. At the age of 6, she was taken in by the Hamilton Children's Home in Butler County, Ohio, where she was raised until the age of 12. It was there that she learned to work, received an education, and was able to begin her spiritual search by attending several different congregations. She loved to visit the churches and learned to sing many of the songs which she could still remember and sing to her final days. It was at the children's home that she learned to swim, to work, to dance, and to make friends. At the age of 12, she had to leave the children's home and was taken in by her oldest sister, Catherine and her husband Roy. Graduating from Middletown High School in 1950, she was the only girl in her family to graduate from high school. Following her graduation, she survived a serious car accident where she was told she would never walk again. She recovered sufficiently to move to Clearfield, Pennsylvania where she found a job at the Sylvania plant and lived with her older brother Wesley. Struggling to use her crutches to get around, she finally threw them away, defied her prognosis and walked on her own. One of her great qualities was her independence and determination to achieve whatever she set out to do.

In 1952, she met Jack Aldwin McGee through a co-worker who was his sister. They were married in 1953 in Clearfield, Ohio. Their life together took them to Washington, DC for a few months, then back to Middletown, Ohio where three of their sons were born. Wanting a new life for their family, Mable left her own family behind and followed her husband to Orem, Utah. It was there she found the spiritual foundation she had been seeking in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout her lifetime. The family soon moved to Portland where the youngest son, Steven, was born. A few years later, they moved to Tacoma, Washington and then settled in Federal Way, Washington. In 1979, they transferred to Corona, California until 2003 when they moved to Elk Gove to be closer to their youngest son, Steven and his family.

Mable loved to learn new things and loved to work. She often had jobs outside the home, mostly as a bookkeeper. She was busy at home, too. She learned cake decorating and loved to make wedding cakes and give them as presents for family and friends. She learned to crochet and make afghans for her grandchildren. She learned to make cards so she could send them out to her friends. She was a great cook and at family dinners, she would never sit down because she was always up getting something for someone or serving someone. She was always interested in helping others.

Mable loved family. She never lived with all of her own family as a child and didn't even know some of her siblings or meet them until she was an adult. Family was very important to her and she made many efforts to return to Ohio to visit her family and to stay in touch with them. As new family members were added, she was very accepting of them. Her good-byes were always accented with, "I loved you first," which was very true. She loved her daughter-in-laws, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She tried to stay in touch with them and loved and enjoyed visits from them. She was loyal to her friends and had life-long friends from the many places she lived. She loved people and brought a light and delight to others around her with her smile, her twinkle in her eyes, and her sweet sense of humor. She loved life and tried to make it good for others around her. She will be greatly missed by many she has known, those from long ago and those who served her in recent months.

She is survived by her sons: Jack Randel McGee ( Marsha ) of Orem, Utah; Gary Aldwin McGee (Karin) of St. George, Utah; Kendal James McGee of Yelm, Washington; and Steven Andrew McGee (Hyunsook) of Elk Grove, California, and additional son, David Duncan (Seongsook) and 9 grandchildren, Nathan, Melanie, Adam, Matthew, Aaron, Jason, Jacob, Jared, and Alicia with 11 great grandchildren and another coming in May.
