IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Madeline Ethel
Torres
July 29, 1931 – April 9, 2024
Madeline Ethel Torres passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 9th at the age of 92. Known by many names — Mom, Mama, Auntie, Lita — she went primarily by Madie, and was loved by everyone who knew her. Her generousness, work ethic, and steadfast devotion to family and the Lord were guiding principles throughout her life. Considered the true matriarch of her family, with seven siblings and all their children, her presence in each one of their lives will be greatly missed. She joins her mother Theresa, father Angelo, sister Eleanor, brothers Ben and Angelo, and husband Sonny in Heaven.
Madie was born in San Jose, CA on July 29, 1931 and grew up in Hayward, CA. After her mother's death in 1952, Madie moved to La Puente, CA and attended LABI College — one of the oldest Hispanic Bible Colleges in the country. After graduation in 1955, she accompanied her father and 2 of her siblings to Hawaii to minister to 3 small churches before returning home to Hayward. There she married her husband, Angelo (known as Sonny) on September 6, 1959. Their devoted 56 years together were an inspiration to all.
Madie worked as an administrative professional with the Hayward Police Department, the San Jose Fire Department, and for the City of San Jose. After 20 years, she formally retired in 1990 and began a second career in the service of the Lord as the Director of Missionettes in San Jose for The Assemblies of God. Her work took her around the world to Russia, Central America, South America, and all across the United States. Her passion and love for many years was helping guide girls across the world on their path towards Christ.
After a brief stint in "retirement", Madie turned a job as the unofficial seamstress for the San Jose Arena into a job as a "bluecoat" — joining her husband there in 2007. It was a natural fit, as she was a lifelong fan of all Bay Area sports teams, especially the San Francisco Giants. She would become a staple of the Arena experience for 14 years, working there until she was 90 years old and treasuring the lifelong friends and memories she made.
When not working, Madie enjoyed a variety of creative hobbies. She was a talented seamstress, creating treasured quilts, pillows, and clothes for her entire family. She was an avid scrapbooker, taking photos from family reunions, vacations, and missionary trips and making beautiful keepsakes for everyone to enjoy. A photographer, a crocheter, a knitter, a lover of puzzles, word searches, and crafts — if there was a way to create something there was a high chance Madie was well versed in it.
Madie's true calling was always family and friends. She kept in touch with everyone — driving, flying, calling, and in her later years FaceTiming everyone and anyone. She was a fixture at all manner of important events — every birthday party, celebratory dinner,
family reunion, dedication, baptism, wedding, funeral. It didn't matter how far she'd have to travel, her family and friends always came first. She loved each and every one of them deeply, and the lessons she bestowed will continue to live on within those who loved her.
Madie is survived by son Timothy, daughter-in-law Carol, granddaughters Caley, Hilary, and Mace, grandson-in-law Adam, granddaughter-in-law Tori, and six great-granddaughters Rachel, Cassie, Kaitlyn, Aubrie, Addison, and Charlotte. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service, which will be held at Bethel Church of San Jose, 1201 S Winchester Blvd on Monday, June 10 at 11:30 am.
