Obituary

Marc Alan Smith of Orem, Utah passed away on November 10, 2022 at St Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 64 surrounded by family. He passed peacefully after an unanticipated medical emergency when an aortic aneurism ruptured. Marc was born September 21, 1958 to Julian Clifford Smith and Hubertina Rita Calistro in Atlanta, Georgia.

The family moved to Syracuse, New York in 1959 and then to Atherton, California in 1961. His school years were spent in Atherton where he was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As a descendant of Hyrum Smith, Marc was always very proud of his lineage and held his family history sacred.

As a boy he was very involved in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout. As a young man he would take troops on Easter week survival trips. He graduated from Woodside High School in 1976 and then Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1987.

In the Spring of 1975 he met Judith (Judy) Elizabeth Perko at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at a practice for a Dance Festival. They married in a gazebo overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Carmel, California on August 4, 1979. They raised their 3 children in Orem Utah until they divorced in 1997. Marc then moved back to the Bay Area where he began a journey that would have many ups and downs. Eventually he moved to Las Vegas for a couple years with his daughters before returning to Utah. In the past year, both Marc and Judy had dreams of getting back together and reuniting their precious family.

Marc had various jobs in his lifetime. He worked as an EMT and drove an ambulance in the Oakland, California area. He was a computer programmer through most of the 90s, as well as a part time math tutor and teacher on and off throughout his life. He was a meticulous painter and was currently working in general construction. Always a student, he was excited to to be learning finish carpentry skills. In his spare time he was beginning to renovate our family home in Orem.

He loved the outdoors and all of its beauty. He was always active and enjoyed water skiing, downhill and cross country snow skiing, long distance running, hiking, camping, gardening, anything outside really. The mountains of Orem were his happy place, and as he put it, "it was a good call for our family to remain nestled in Timp's embrace".

Marc was also passionate about music, and would attend concerts every chance he got - even working as an usher if it meant he could be there. His record collection is impressive and diverse, it never stopped growing. Some favorites were the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, the Ramones, lots of punk bands, and countless more. At home he could often be found watching movies with a bowl of cereal in one hand while wiping tears of laughter or sadness with the other.

He was a self proclaimed "heavy dude" that loved deeply and is greatly missed.

Marc is survived by his mother, his three children and their spouses, Wesley Joseph Smith (Sarah Marie Decker), Sara Elizabeth Smith Weinzetl (Anthony Paul Weinzetl) and Samantha Elyse Smith (Michael Ray Justin Fletcher), and four grandchildren, Hero Elias Fletcher, Blake Elizabeth Weinzetl, Apollo Ray Fletcher and Dylan Reign Weinzetl, his three brothers and their spouses, Brian Wesley Smith (Karen Lee Alder), Monte John Smith (Donna Ann Morris) and Michael Scott Smith (Patty Waldrop), and many nieces, nephews, cousins and an aunt.
