Our dear wife and mother, Marcia Ann Stringham Wight, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2019, at the age of 86, shortly after an accidental fall. Marcia was born in LaGrande, Oregon on July 25, 1932, and lived in Elgin, Oregon during her early years. She attended and graduated from Brigham Young University, where she met her husband Theodore Alton Wight while playing in the Brigham Young University Symphony Orchestra. Marcia often told her children that she knew Ted was the man she would marry when they once traveled from Provo to Salt Lake City on a date and neither one of them spoke a single word to the other. Both apparently appreciated the saying "silence is golden." Consequently, their children are "aspiring" conversationalists.
Marcia was an accomplished musician, playing violin, viola and piano. She played viola with the Utah Symphony for three years, together with her husband Ted who played the flute with the symphony for 11 years. She left the symphony to care for her growing family. She was a beloved angel mother, devoted to raising her children and setting an example of faith in, obedience to, and love of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though she was known to immediately disappear prior to church sacrament meetings upon seeing the program announce that speakers were to be "invited from the congregation." She served faithfully in numerous church callings, including Relief Society president and Primary pianist. Her most notable quality was her dedication to ministering to those in need by visiting the sick, preparing meals for those in need and sending her children off to deliver the meals. She will be remembered for her impeccably clean and organized home, but more importantly for her quick and quiet service, which will be a legacy to her children and grandchildren who will always aspire to serve with love as she did.
Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Jacob and Marelda Sturgill Stringham, and her great granddaughter Angela Kristen Brown. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Theodore Alton Wight, her six children, Kirsten Wight Pederson (Larry), Christopher Lee Wight (Kristen), Lysa Lyn Wight Rytting (Bryce), Colby Todd Wight (Anita), Mitchell Stringham Wight (Sandy), and Andrea Wight Greenwood (Travis), 24 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and her sister, Barbara Peterson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ray and Judy Wight, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at the Edgemont 5th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 350 East 2950 North, Provo, Utah, from 11:00 am-12:00 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem.
No public viewing will be held prior to the funeral services due to Ted's health conditions, Marcia's mortal fear of being the center of attention and her personal wishes (Marcia was adamant about this and we are just being respectful and obedient children).
Family and friends of Marcia and Ted are encouraged to share their condolences and memories of Marcia on the Walker-Sanderson website www.walkersanderson.com on Marcia's obituary.
Marcia's family wishes to express their appreciation to Envision Hospice and Legacy Village staff for their compassionate care during Marcia's final days, as well as to Walker-Sanderson Funeral Home.
