Margaret Brown Black Obituary

1948-2026

Margaret Ann Brown Black, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, teacher, and civic leader, passed away peacefully at home on June 19, 2026 in Orem, Utah. Margaret was born May 16, 1948 in Provo, Utah to Veone Menlove Brown and Jesse Richard (Dick) Brown. Formative experiences from her childhood included living in Ahvaz, Iran, and in Denver, Colorado. She graduated from Provo High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University where she met and married her beloved sweetheart of 58 years, Dennis Charles Black. Together they raised six children. She was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher and instilled a love of music in the hundreds of students she taught during her over 40 year teaching career. Margaret was a civic leader and public servant, serving 9 years as a city council member for Orem City (2007-2016). Throughout her life and during her tenure on the city council, Margaret was a tireless advocate for education, public safety, the arts, and beautification of public spaces. Margaret served as Chair and Board Member of the Community Action Services and Food Bank, Member of the Orem Kiwanis Club, multiple terms as PTA President, along with many other community service and civic board positions.

Margaret was a true and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among other callings, she served as Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society President, Gospel Doctrine instructor, temple worker, and full-time missionary alongside her husband in the Korea Seoul South Mission (2016-2017). Her profound faith and deep love for her Savior were evident throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband Dennis; daughter Kerri Madsen (Paul) of Draper, UT; son Brian (LeAnne) of Littleton, CO; son David (Jaclyn) of Centerville, UT; son Steven (Amber) of Medford, OR; Michael (Jana) of Springville, UT; and Emily Conkey (Don) of Boulder, CO; 26 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister Susan Mooney (Randy) of St. George, UT; and brother Gregory (Diane) of Provo, UT.

She was preceded in death by her mother Veone Menlove Brown, and father Jesse Richard (Dick) Brown, and three grandchildren - Christina and Amy Madsen, and Claire Black.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 29th at 11:00 AM at the Orem Canyon View Stake Center, 800 N 575 E, Orem, UT. There will be a viewing from 6-8 PM on Sunday, June 28th, at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E 800 N Orem, UT, and on Monday, June 29th from 9-10:30 AM.
