Obituary

Margene (Hassell) Olenik left this earth in the quiet peace of her home on August 12, 2017 in the company of her dear children, grandchildren and adoring husband. Her passing marked the culmination of a two-and-a-half year, courageous journey with cancer. Margene, more fondly known as "Honey" to her eleven grandchildren, was born May 28, 1955 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the youngest of nine children to M. Lee and Genevieve (Tietjen) Hassell. She spent her formative years in the rural splendor of small-town Bluewater, New Mexico. Upon high school graduation from Grants High School in 1973 she moved to Provo, Utah to a small apartment on 300 North. Margene worked as a seamstress at Jolene's for the next year and a half, which furthered her life-long master craftmanship in sewing. In September, she met a handsome sailor, Fred Olenik, back from Vietnam, out of the Navy and attending BYU on the G.I. Bill. The two quickly fell in love and were engaged in January 1974 and sealed for time and all eternity on March 30, 1974 in the LDS Manti Temple. Ten months after their marriage, Margene achieved what she considered her greatest accomplishment, which was to become a mother. In her words, "I had my own child, finally. All I ever wanted in life was to have kids; it was pretty special." Over the next 22 years, this happy couple had eight wonderful children, which made Margene very proud. Apart from 3 years in Willits, California, Margene and her sweetheart raised their large family in Orem, Utah, with 17 years spent in a home behind Sharon Park Elementary, 9 years in the neighborhood of Northridge, and 12 years in their present neighborhood near Orem High School. For most of their married life, Fred worked as a salesman for ACCO Chain, which required a great deal of travel. Margene was a stalwart companion during those years patiently taking on the bulk of the responsibility of everyday childrearing, which she did with a happy heart. Margene's heart was also devoted to her sincere and powerful testimony in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in many callings in Primary, Young Womens, and Relief Society. She loved serving in organizations where she could spend more time with her own children. She was also very proud of her children's missionary service. Her beautiful and simple testimony was described by her as, "I've always known it. Never questioned it. Never doubted it." Margene embodied true Christianity in how she lived her life. Never one to talk a lot, she has been the one to act. She filled her time on this earth with selfless acts of service in her steady and quiet pursuits and unconditional love for everyone she knew. The deep love her children and grandchildren have for her is expressed in her nickname "Honey." No name has ever been more fitting of the adoration they all feel for her. She is survived by her devoted husband, Fred; children, Natasha Olenik, Yvonne (James) Drake, Brad (Char) Olenik, Brent Olenik, Dale (Chelsey) Olenik, Victoria (Jake Freese) Olenik, Blake Olenik, and Cade Olenik; and eleven wonderful grandchildren, Ian, Grace and Mya Kellems, Riley Olenik; Elise Drake; Emelia Olenik; Summer, Shelby and Scout Olenik; Finn and Belle Freese. She is also survived by her six siblings Wayne (Elizabeth) Hassell, Wendell (Sue) Hassell, Denny Hassell, Earl (Judy) Hassell, LeJean (Randy) Goslar, Kelly (Cindy) Hassell; and two foster sisters, Kat (Steve) Mayne, and Kathy Weddle. She was preceded in death by her brother John Hassell, sister Jenna Lee Gleed, and her parents M. Lee and Genevieve Hassell. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, August 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Services will be held at the LDS chapel located at 80 South 280 East in Orem, Utah. There will also be a viewing on Thursday evening, August 17th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home located at 646 East 800 North in Orem. Interment at Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem.
