Life Sketch
Marilyn Kawehiwehiokala Broad Kozlowski
1933-2019
Marilyn Kawehiwehiokala Kozlowski, age 86 of Provo, Utah, passed away Sunday afternoon February 24th, 2019 at home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Marilyn was born in Laie, Hawaii on February 21, 1933 to John and Maggie (Kenison) Broad. Marilyn grew up in Laie, Hawaii with her 11 siblings. She was an exceptional athlete and like all good Polynesian children, she danced, sang and played the ukulele. Marilyn and her family, along with many Hawaiian members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, spent many years of sacrifice and service in an effort to help raise funds to build the LDS Hawaiian Temple, the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii), Church Ward Houses and the Polynesian Cultural Center. The church members in mom's hometown, worked with the Honolulu Tourism Council to bus tourists over to the North Shore and drop them off in the small town of Laie. The locals would dazzle the visitors with an authentic "Hukilau", where the tourists would actually go into the surf and help pull in the fish nets for the Luau that later took place on the beach. No luau was complete without Kalua Pig, Poi and of course Polynesian Dancing! In 1948, at just 15 years old, Marilyn danced the Hula on stage at many of these events, and eventually became the first woman in the Islands to perform the "Double Fire Knife Dance".
Marilyn graduated from Kahuku High school in 1951, where she played basketball and volleyball. Our mom would tell us stories of how the kids from Laie on the North Shore of Oahu were considered the kids from the country and she always found great pride in beating the city kids from Honolulu. (I'm pretty sure there might have been some actual beatings, but at least we all know where our competitive spirit comes from!!) After high school, Marilyn boarded a ship to the mainland, where she then hopped on a train from Los Angeles and traveled all the way to Provo, Utah where she attended Brigham Young University. After 1 year at BYU studying Physical Education, Marilyn traveled back to Hawaii where she became a member of a Polynesian dance troop and on occasion she would have the opportunity to perform for the troops who were stationed at The Schofield Barracks.
In 1954 Marilyn met the love of her life, Michael Alexander Kozlowski. Michael was stationed at the Schofield Barracks while serving in the Korean War. After meeting Marilyn, Michael was so excited because he thought he would spend the rest of his life, living in the South Pacific. He quickly found out that he married the one Polynesian woman who wanted off "The Rock!" It was obviously true love because on April 15 th , 1955 they were married in Laie, HI and started what would be a marriage of 62 years with a small family of 7 children. Because of a new career opportunity, Michael, Marilyn and Yasmeen moved to the mainland and lived in New Jersey. Over the next few years Mike Jr. made his entrance into the family and not long after, Richard followed. During their time living on the East Coast, Marilyn was so happy when Michael became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Three years later, while pregnant with Malia the family moved back to the island of Oahu where Michael, Marilyn and the children were sealed for time and all eternity in the Laie Temple on July 15 th , 1961. Not long after that, Malia was born and 16 months later, Glen followed. In the fall of 1963 the family moved to Cardiff by the Sea, California. Noelani was then born a few months later and a decade later the family was blessed with David.
Marilyn was always involved in and participated in her children's school and sports activities. For several years, Marilyn worked for the San Diequito School District in Encinitas, CA. She ran a summer program where she would provide a "Safe Place" for the local kids to hang out and participate in various activities and projects while also learning about different cultures. The kids also got to go on weekly field trips to the Oceanside Community Pool and the Solana Beach Skating Rink, as well as yearly trips to The San Diego Zoo and Sea World. Our mom was not only dedicated to her family and church callings, but it gave her great joy to also be involved in the community and make a difference in the lives of everyone she met. People from all walks of life, love her and still remember her fondly.
After living in the San Diego area for 12 years, our mother supported our Father and they moved our family to Davenport, Iowa where dad earned his decree as a Doctor of Chiropractic's. Once again, our mother worked tirelessly as a homemaker, devoted church member and as a positive influence in the community. Marilyn had a "Green Thumb" and she taught the families in our community to grow gardens and how to use the vegetables that they grew. More importantly, she taught them to take pride in their homes and to cherish their families.
In the summer of 1978, our family moved to Carlsbad, Ca. Marilyn had worked for the church for many years as a custodian, and willingly accepted a calling, working in the Carlsbad and Oceanside area. Marilyn performed this calling faithfully until she retired. With the rising cost of living in the state of California and finding a new opportunity in Utah, Mike and Marilyn moved to Provo, Utah in 2002. In Utah, Marilyn was thrilled to join a Polynesian Club where she found so much joy in learning to re-speak her native Hawaiian language. With the Polynesian Club and its members, she was able to once again go out into the community and share her love for her beautiful Hawaiian culture with the residents in many retirement centers throughout Utah Valley. Our Mother's Legacy of Love and Giving has been passed on to each of her children, and our mom can rest peacefully knowing that her "Aloha Spirit" will live on through all of us.
On the morning of April 24 th , 2017 Marilyn lost her beloved husband Michael. Our mother has spent the last 2 years mourning his loss and she battled her own health issues as well. In the end, Marilyn wanted to be with her beloved sweetheart. In the early afternoon of February 24 th , 2019 Marilyn Kawehiwehiokala, passed away peacefully.
Marilyn is survived by her children: Yasmeen (Paul) Ruffner, Mike Kozlowski, Richard (Julie) Kozlowski, Malia (Dan) Matuszak, Glen (Julie) Kozlowski, Noelani (Ben Fisher) Kozlowski, and David (Alesha) Kozlowski.
