Obituary

Mark David Hartshorn, 65, passed away suddenly at home in Orem, Utah on January 4, 2020. Our beloved husband, son, brother, father and grandfather was born in American Fork, Utah on July 29, 1954. He grew up as the second of five children of Leon Roundy Hartshorn and Beatrice Scoville. His first word was happy" and he lived that way–a cheerful and sociable boy who made great friendships throughout his life. At Orem High School he met his future wife, Ann Rickenbach. Mark served in the Central American Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1973-1975. He married Ann in the Provo Temple on May 7, 1976. He attended Brigham Young University where he studied political science, played intercollegiate soccer, sang in the men's choir and was named valedictorian of his college. Mark began his career as a congressional aide in Washington DC. With an interest in diplomatic civil service, he enrolled at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston. Halfway through the two-year program, he changed course and took a job as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company. That led him to study business at the University of Virginia's Darden School. After earning his MBA, Mark began to work for a software company. Later he enjoyed working as an executive search professional for Russell Reynolds Associates in Washington DC. His genuine interest and concern for others together with his insights into personalities, skillsets, and organizations made him well suited for success. During his young married life, Mark served his wife, children, church, and community continuously. He was the first bishop of the Round Rock Ward (Texas). He often worked with the youth who enjoyed his fun-loving, energetic and outgoing personality. He enjoyed playing church basketball and squash, and he was an avid runner. Mark's promising professional career was cut short at age 36 when he suffered a brain hemorrhage and thereafter developed epilepsy. Life for him and his family was upended causing retirement and a return to Utah to be near extended family. For 29 years he endured epilepsy, anxiety and heavy medication well, though they diminished his energy and physical capacity. He would say that on a good day he only had two productive hours—beyond that required recovery. Notwithstanding his limitations, his accomplishments and family contributions were extraordinary. In 1993, Mark toured the Springville Museum of Art and was moved by a painting titled Dances Through Disaster by Brian Kershisnik. That painting changed Mark's life. He was inspired to start up New Vision Art and treasured working with Brian and other local artists throughout his life. For a brief period in the early 2010s, Mark experienced remarkable improvement in his health, opened his own search firm and worked in-house for Remedy Informatics. Mark was a man of many talents. His health challenges did not cause him to be bitter, but rather engendered humility and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. His legacy is one of courage, humor, wisdom and friendship. He loved his wife and family and they will miss his sage counsel and encouragement. Mark would want to express gratitude for his neuropsychologist Donna Andrews, along with a community of friends who gave him hope and encouragement. He is survived by his mother Bea and his wife Ann, their five children; Sarah Mendenhall (Matt), Joshua (Sarah), Rachel McKissick (Sean), Andrew (Jessica), and Ben (Whitney), and 13 of their grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Abigail Mendenhall. A funeral service will be held on Friday January 10, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Heatheridge Stake Center (450 East 2000 North, Orem). Visitations will be at the same location on Thursday from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial in the Lehi Cemetery.
