Mark J Rowe, a beloved son of God, transitioned to his holy habitation on Friday, January 11, 2019, at the age of 75.
Mark was born in Oakland, California on July 16, 1943, a devoted son of DeLos Allen Rowe and Mary Alice Pratt. His family shortly moved to Bellingham, Washington where he has cherished memories of close relationships working together. He was student body president at Meridian High School and was well prepared to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Southern Australia as a young man.
He is eternally sealed to Paula Joyce Taylor, having joyfully followed the counsel of his mission president, Bruce R. McConkie, to marry the right person, in the right place, by the right authority. Their marriage, which began on May 31, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple, will never end.
In steadfast union with Paula, he loved and taught his five children the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their family home was in Chesapeake, Virginia for many years and then in Orem, Utah. Teresa Rowe Rawlins, Laura Rowe Talbot, Mark David Rowe, Daniel Taylor Rowe, and Jonathan Pratt Rowe will eternally be shaped by Mark's humble emulating of Christlike attributes. Their spouses, David Brent Rawlins, Jeffery Neil Talbot, Alyson Horn Rowe, Melissa Stoker Rowe, and Megan Bingham Rowe were each decidedly welcomed into the Rowe family unit and deeply impacted by his example.
Mark and Paula have fifteen cherished grandchildren, four of whom are married, and five darling great grandchildren. Mark found great joy in his posterity and was eager to be involved in their lives. Mark has three living siblings, Bruce Allen (Sandy, deceased), Deanne Johnson (Bob), and Glenn Neil (Melody). He now has reunited with his parents and his little sister Lorette, whose early death impacted the focus of his life's direction.
Mark studied at Brigham Young University where he received his Bachelor of Science and his doctoral degree followed by a post doctoral year at Stanford University. He was a successful biochemist and talented teacher. He researched and taught at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Brigham Young University. His fascination with mitochondrial processes and genetics added to basic science research and augmented his faith that "all things denote there is a God." At BYU he was a leader in both the departmental and college level of administration and he valued the close association with strong colleagues.
Mark learned from and blessed hundreds of families and individuals in the capacity of his many church assignments. He served as president of the Norfolk Virginia Stake while he and Paula raised their young family. They treasure these formative family years in the east. With a professional opportunity to move west, the family relocated, and Mark was asked to work with the BYU student stakes for twelve years.
He was then called to preside over the Nebraska Omaha Mission, influencing hundreds of missionaries and their future families. Missionary labors continued upon their return as he then served at the Provo Missionary Training Center. Mark and Paula were next called to serve in the Pacific Area assisting mission presidents.
He has most recently loved his service with Paula in the temple presidency of the Mount Timpanogos Temple. Prior to his being called home he was serving as ward Elder's Quorum President and as a sealer in the Provo Temple. We are certain his labors for the Lord continue in his new location.
Through all these years, Mark was entirely present as husband, father, grandfather and son. His eternal perspective made family relationships and teachings of principles a priority. Our shared memories with him are abundant and sweet. Mark spoke a great deal about "having seen [the promises] afar off" and our need to be persuaded of them and embrace them. He now qualifies to receive those promises.
In lieu of flowers, the family knows Mark would want increased devotion to our families and to the work of the Lord. We are acutely aware of his legacy, and as his loved ones we commit to increasingly dedicating ourselves to ministering to others. We invite you to do the same.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, January 19, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel located at 155 West 1600 South, Orem. Visitations will be at the church on Friday, January 18, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 19, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery.
