Obituary

Mark H. Wight was born in Hot Lake, Oregon, on October 30, 1934. His parents were Anna and Lowen Wight. Most of his childhood was spent in the logging town of Susanville, CA. He loved to bike and hunt with his dog. His exploits included catching a burglar at the hardware store and also having his motor scooter burn up in the street. He was a shoeshine boy with his own homemade shoeshine kit. Because he was the smallest in the school, he played Tiny Tim in the high school Christmas play. He graduated from Lassen High School. Upon graduation, he went to BYU but was intercepted by an Air Force recruiter. Mark changed his plans and joined up. He was sent to Turkey as an MP. He loved it there and learned to speak Turkish. He also became a world traveler as he got to tour many countries. When his time was up, he went from active duty to reserves. He stayed in that capacity until retirement as a Master Sergeant. He also served during the Gulf War. Mark decided to go to Utah State for a while and study forestry. He had missed the normal date for a mission but was called later to the Central Atlantic States mission. When he got home again he decided to try BYU. There he received his B.S. in social work, and also met his wife, Carol. They were married in March 1964 and were together for 56 years. After graduating, Mark took a job in Salinas, CA as a social worker. During this time he and Carol were married and lived in Monterrey, CA. Mark began moving up in his employment and so they lived in several different places. Mark began his career in the social service area and continued with the state of CA as a voc rehab counselor. He worked as a counselor and teacher at the Susanville, CA prison and then at the Fairfield, CA prison. It was at this time that Brett entered the family, and they moved to Redding, CA. Two years later, Jennie joined the family. Following this, Mark decided to become a federal employee and took a job in Mountain Home, ID. From there he went to Castle AFB in Merced, CA and then to Stockton, CA. After that the family took the big plunge and went to Richfield, UT. He worked there for the B.L.M. until the program was cut. Then they went to Hill AFB where Andrew was born. They lived there for 8 years (with a 3-year stint in Germany). Mark describes his employment during these years as: "I learned to communicate and coordinate effectively with all levels of management. My positions as a contract manager, educational specialist, and medical administrator supervisor taught me these skills." Mark picked Provo as his retirement city and built a lovely home in the River Bottoms. He and Carol lived there for 30 years. During that time, Mark worked at Job Service and UVU. He volunteered at the MTC, and also served as a service missionary there. He also volunteered as a guide at the BYU athletic center. He got to know all the players and turned into an avid sports fan. In his last years he suffered from prostate cancer and heart problems. On January 8. 2020, Mark was called home and joined his parents and his brothers, Richard and Dwayne. He is survived by his wife, Carol, his sons, Brett and Andrew, and his daughter, Jennifer Nikbakht. He has 9 grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 17, 2020, 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Church on 365 South 900 East, Orem. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m., Utah Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, UT 84065. Military Honors by American Legion Post 72.
