Obituary

MARY GRACE BULLOCK 1923 - 2017 Mary Grace Bullock (nee Kirkvold), passed away peacefully on July 11, 2017. She was 94 years old. Grace was born in Manyberries, Alberta, Canada on April 3, 1923 to Pete Kirkvold and Annie (Fraser) Kirkvold. She was the third of 5 children, and she spent her childhood on the family sheep ranch. She attended High School in Taber, Alberta and it was there at a Gold and Green Ball that she met her future husband, Evan James Bullock. They were marrried on June 27, 1942 in Taber, and later sealed in the Cardston Temple. They were married for 69 years. Evan had joined the RCAF in 1941 and just after they were married he was transferred to Ontario. To join him, Grace had to travel alone all the way across the country by herself, at the age of 19. They were transferred again to Saskatchewan, then Alberta and finally Manitoba where Evan trained RCAF pilots for overseas missions, and Grace gave birth to their first child, Brian. Towards the end of the war, Grace (8 months pregnant with her second child) and Evan moved back to Taber to work on the family farm. After a few years of farming they experienced a total loss of their crops and consequently lost their farm. With 4 children at the time, this was devastating. Eventually, Evan was able to get a job as a helicopter pilot and left for Vancouver, B.C. Grace, having just delivered her 5th child drove out to Vancouver with the children to join him. Every spring and summer, Evan's helicopter flying took him north to the remotest parts of Canada, where there were no phones and few post offices. Grace stayed behind with the children for 4 months each year. After four years Grace and Evan moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1958 where Evan and his brother started their own business, Bullock Helicopters. Grace and Evan stayed in Calgary for 18 years, raising their 7 children. During those years, Grace served in her church as Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society President, Sunday School teacher, and Mia Maids teacher. She loved quilting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, canning, baking, and even making chocolates by hand. She was known far and wide for her choke cherry syrup and her home baked bread. She was even more renowned for her ruthless card playing. No one could beat her at Hand and Foot! In 1976 Grace and Evan moved from Canada to Provo, Utah. Grace and Evan remained very active in their church, serving two missions, the first a proselytizing mission in the state of Washington, the other a temple service mission in Washington, D.C. Grace is survived by her sons Brian (Cheryl), Fraser (Jennifer) and Michael (Catherine), her daughters Brenda (Dave), Deborah (Gary), Kari (Jack), and Penny, her sisters-in-law, Mary Bullock and Lorraine Bullock, as well as 19 grandchildren 27 great grandchildren, and a great great granddaughter due in December. Funeral services will be held on July 22 at 11:00 am at the Riverwoods LDS chapel, 4800 N 300 W, Provo. Viewings will be held there on July 21 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, and on July 22 from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery at 4800 N 650 E, Provo. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Perpetual Education Fund of the LDS Church.
