Mary Gertrude (Pease) Harrington graduated from this life, and returned home to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ early in the morning on May 24, 2018. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends, but we are sure there is a great celebration taking place with family, friends and her beloved pets whom she cherished during her life here on Earth. Mary was born on November 6, 1924 to Ethel Leone (Edmunds) Tucker Pease and Jonathan Francis Pease in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont. Mary spent her childhood in Bethel, and graduated Valedictorian of her 1943 senior class of Whitcomb High School. During WWII, Mary and her sister, Irene, served as a members of the Army Air Forces Aircraft Warning Service Reserve. Throughout her life Mary was very Patriotic. She always took the opportunities given her to show her love and gratitude for this great land, through music, spoken words or service. She shared her love of this great country with family members and friends alike, and was proud to be an American. During her time in mortality, Mary was blessed with a brilliant mind, a photographic memory, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She excelled in scholarship and citizenship in every aspect of her life. She continued to cultivate her love of history, and majored in it while she attended the University of Vermont. Mary received her Batchelor's degree and graduated Summa cum laude in 1947. After graduation, Mary returned to Bethel to help care for her parents and worked for Samuel Abbot , a local stocks and bonds broker. Later on, Mary worked at the telephone office, and during her employment there was introduced by a mutual friend in 1960 to Donald Lee Harrington from Marathon, NY. Mary and Don were later married on June 2, 1961 at the Episcopal church in Bethel, VT. After her marriage to Don, she moved with him to Marathon, NY. Mary, Donald and family traveled often to and from Vermont to visit Mary's family. Unfortunately during one of their return trips to Marathon, the family was involved in a tragic automobile accident. Donald Harrington passed away from the injuries he sustained shortly after the accident on October 10, 1965. After Donald's death, Mary returned home to Vermont to live with her sister, Irene, and her family in Bethel. She and the children lived with Irene's family for about 3 years, after which she purchased a home in Bethel, Vermont. Also during this time, Mary was offered a position at Clifford of Vermont, a cable and wire company also located in Bethel. Mary was active in the Eastern Star and other community service organizations throughout her life. In 1974, she chose to be baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mary loved her Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and her faith in them remained strong to her very last moments. She was so thankful for influence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in many positions within the Church including seminary teacher, visiting teacher, and as president, counselor and secretary in Relief Society, Young Womens and Primary. She also loved geneology, and served as an assistant at the Stake Family History Library in Montpelier for several years. She worked for Clifford of Vermont until about 1985. When she retired from advertising at Clifford's, she worked at other local businesses in the area. These included Hawk Mountain Corporation, and local attorney Norman Case. In 2004, Mary moved to Shelburne, VT. During her time in Shelburne, she served as the librarian at Heart Works Renaissance School in Shelburne, VT. Mary LOVED books, and could often be found at home reading a book in her recliner with a bowl of popcorn close at hand. Mom's favorite foods always included popcorn and peanut butter. Mary loved gardening, and the blessings of sharing a bountiful harvest with family and friends. Her children remember driving around town in the evening and dropping off paper grocery bags for those we thought needed it most. She was very service oriented and was always looking to be helpful and supportive of family and friends. Mary is survived by her son, Alan (Donna) Harrington, of Bethel, VT, and two daughters, Cheryl (John) Thomas of Point Blank, TX, and Diane (Russell) Stringham of Orem, UT. She is also survived by one brother, Jon (Shirley) Pease of Tunbridge, VT. as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on August 4, 2018, at the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial Chapel located on Dairy Hill Road in South Royalton, VT from 1 pm - 3 pm. Interment and graveside service will follow the small luncheon at the Chapel. Interment will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Bethel, VT. The family wishes to express it's gratitude for the loving, tender care given to Mary by BrightOn Hospice, and all the wonderful, amazing staff at Assisted Living in Orem. She touched the lives of so many people throughout her life, including the members of her family and friends alike. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
