Mary Olive Fowkes Stanley, 94, died peacefully of causes incident to age on March 3, 2018. She was born on November 27, 1923, to John Leonard and Maud Hoyt Fowkes in Starr Utah, the youngest of six children. She loved her childhood growing up on the farm, feeding the animals, climbing trees, and riding her horse. She stood out in her class of eight individuals at Mona School, followed by high school at Juab High. Her gift for music, especially the piano and voice, was evident early in her life. She began playing the piano for Church meetings at age nine and continued until ninety. She attended BYU on scholarship until her marriage to her eternal sweetheart, Daryl H. Stanley, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 18, 1945. It was the war, and Daryl got leave to come back and get married, but with only a week's notice for his bride. So Olive left school and spent the next year and one half following Daryl to his various assignments. He was discharged just following the birth of their first child. They ended up with a family of ten children: Afton (John Howard), Tim (B.K.), Robert (Evelyn), David (Sally), Denise (Bruce Duffield), Paul (Barbara), Jon (LeeAnne), Mark (Tami), Barbara (Rod Fisher), and Richard (Diane). She returned to BYU and graduated with her oldest child in 1968, both receiving degrees in elementary education. Olive taught the fourth grade for four years and then switched to resource, where she thought she could do the most good, for the next thirteen. She retired after seventeen years and began a new world of service: she and Daryl served three missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, worked in two temples, served in the BYU Family History library, and as ward family history consultants. They were founding members of Elderquest at UVU, they enjoyed their association with the Squaw Peak Sams, and they traveled the world. Daryl passed in 2005. They were married for sixty years. Olive served in many ward and stake positions in the Church. She was an extraordinarily faithful visiting teacher. Olive also sewed, crocheted, enjoyed plants and flowers, and reading. Her wish for her children was that they "would grow up to be good fathers and good mothers." Her fifty grandchildren and 110 great-grandchildren can attest to fulfillment of that desire. Many of those grandchildren have sweet memories of reading help, playing chicken foot, or Grandma sharing testimony. She loved her posterity and had a special feeling for the babies. She was loved and considered a special friend by those blessed to be in her sphere of influence. Olive is survived by her ten children and their spouses, 50 grandchildren, and 110 grandchildren. She is predeceased by her beloved Daryl; parents, Len and Maud; her sisters, Blanche Cloward, Lucille Holladay, and Jennie Leona; and her brothers, James Eldon and Earl Fowkes Services to honor this kind and gentle woman are a viewing Thursday evening, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Walker-Sanderson Funeral Home (646 East 800 North, Orem) and a funeral held Friday morning, 11:00 a.m., at the Hillcrest Stake Center (1450 South 800 East, Orem), with a viewing before from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery. The family would like to thank all those who took such good care of Mom: Stonehenge of Orem, Hillcrest 3rd Ward, many family members, and all the devoted medical personnel.
