IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Matthew Robert
Rowe
July 26, 1934 – October 16, 2022
On Sunday, October 16th, 2022, Matthew Robert Rowe (Bob Rowe) beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriarch, slipped peacefully from this earth life surrounded by his loving family due to natural causes. Bob loved the Lord, his family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He loved taking trips with his wife, Luanna, of 65 years, reading, writing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He dedicated his life to studying the gospel and was a remarkable example of someone who put the Lord first in all things.
Bob was born on July 26th,1934 to his parents Matthew Pratt Rowe, and Lanor Rachel Hailstone Rowe, on a summer day in Butte, Montana. During his childhood he enjoyed exploring the outdoors with his older sister Betty. His father was a mining engineer, and his family lived in Montana, Arkansas,Texas, and New Mexico. When Bob was 15, he and his sister, Betty, welcomed the surprise arrival of their younger sister, Kathy. Shortly after, they moved to Grand Junction, Colorado at the start of his senior year in high school, where Bob became great friends with Wilbur Wortham, whose little sister Bob would eventually marry.
Bob graduated from high school in Grand Junction, excelling in Physics and Math. He was an excellent swimmer and Colorado State Doubles Tennis Champion. After graduation Bob attended BYU, and worked in his father's mines during the summers of 1950-1954 until his mission to the North Central States (primarily Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and some parts of Canada).
Upon returning from his mission, the world had learned to jitterbug…. and he had not. He enlisted the aid of his best friend's younger sister, Luanna Wortham, to teach him. Little did he know that the dance lesson would lead to 65 years of eternal marriage! Bob and Luanna were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 3rd, 1957.
After graduating from BYU with a Physics Degree, they departed for the Air Force, and spent the next 3 years in Ohio. Following his military service, he obtained a Doctorate of Law from the University of Utah. He then began a career with IBM. There he became known for being a visionary regarding the idea of small, personal computers in every home at a time when computers took up entire rooms! He believed this technology would enable education to expand exponentially for every student. Educational hardware and software became the focus of his career. Because of this, he was invited to be on the elite ground floor team that developed the first personal computers for IBM. His career took the family from Utah to Washington D.C. to Florida.
During his life, Bob was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many capacities, including Guide on Temple Square; Stake Presidency Counselor in both Washington D.C. and West Palm Beach, Florida; BYU Bishop; President of the England Leeds Mission; MTC Branch President for Senior Couples; and Patriarch in Florida and BYU stakes for over 30 years. He will be remembered by his family for his devotion to the Lord, His humble desire to live by the Spirit and eternally progress, his profound wisdom, and living a genuine life without guile.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Luanna Lea Wortham Rowe; Lori (Gary) Johnson, Dana (Destin) Swartz, David (Mindy) Rowe, Bruce (Kimberly) Rowe, and Matthew (Kimmy) Rowe. They have 23 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren whom they love. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty.
