Obituary

CALVIN LOUIS RUMBAUGH, MD Calvin Louis Rumbaugh, MD, a recent resident of Provo, UT, passed away in, 15 April 2019, with his two sons present at his side. Calvin was born in Rochester, NY, 30 August 1925, the only child of Leo Calvin Rumbaugh and Gertrude Frevert. Calvin was raised in Albion, Noble County IN, in a modest farming community, where at an early age he exhibited a driven and disciplined character which would contribute to a distinguished career in the field of medicine. The family lived in and owned the Albion Hotel across the street from what is now "the historic" Noble County Courthouse where his father was Justice of the Peace. They also owned two farms in the county. After graduating from Albion High School with honors in 1943, Calvin began his undergraduate education while in Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, then accepting appointment as Second Lieutenant and Infantry Unit Commander supervising tactical training of infantry troops. He received the WWII American Theater Award and Victor y Medal. Following honorable discharge from the Army, he continued his education at Northwestern University in premed and earned a BS in chemistry in 1948. Following that, he proceeded on to Northwestern University Medical School (NUMS), graduating with an MD in 1952. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Kappa Fraternity. While working as a locum tenens at Langmack Hospital, Sweet Home, OR, Calvin met and married Trilby Langmack, daughter of Robert S. Langmack, MD and Hester C. Beard, RN on August 20,1954. Calvin became a noted radiologist specializing in neuroradiology, working at a number of hospitals and clinics across the country. Toward the end of his career, he accepted an appointment as the department head of radiology for Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. He was also the director of the division of neuroradiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital, both located in Boston. Early on in his profession, he sought grants to study the effects of drugs on the brain. In addition, Calvin dedicated much of his career studying cerebrovascular disease, authoring a monumental publication, Cerebrovascular Disease Imaging and Interventional Treatment Options, while Professor Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, with contributions from other experts in the field. In addition, he authored many other medical publications. Calvin greatly enjoyed teaching and was a professor at University of Southern California, in addition to Harvard. Calvin was devoted to his family emphasizing to his children the importance of education, hard work, perseverance, honesty, humility, respect for others and physical fitness. In addition to his passion for medicine, Calvin enjoyed animals, especially dogs. The history of the American Civil War and WWII were special interests. He loved long (arduous) road trips and observing the weather, which he commented on daily. The family often teased that he missed his calling as weatherman and truck-driver. Calvin retained an interest in agriculture, relating with fondness the farm experiences of his youth. Calvin is survived by his wife of 65 years Trilby, his daughters Tamara Rather and Trudy Rumbaugh, MD; his sons Leo and Carl; and four grandchildren Maxwell Farrow, Christian Rather, Theresa Wycoff and William Rather. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons Carl James and Robert Louis. The family held a small private memorial to commemorate the life of their father and husband shortly after his passing. Condolences can be sent via email to: [email protected]
