Our loving mother, Melba Jean Carlson, passed away on August 19, 2021 in Spanish Fork Utah.
Melba was born on April 24, 1934. She was the firstborn to Norman A. Myers and Hazel Bailey Myers. She attended school in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School. She received awards for 3 years of perfect attendance and excellence in shorthand.
She worked for Nate Morgan Jewelers after high school. That must be where her love of bling came from. Melba met the handsome doorman, Joe Carlson, during her Senior year while working at the Chief Theater. She married Joe on April 2, 1955, in Pocatello Idaho. They made their first home in Bremerton Washington while he finished his military service.
They returned to Pocatello, where she supported Joe as he attended pharmacy school at ISU. After graduation Joe and Melba moved with their young children to Orem Utah. Melba was a corporate wife who spent much of her time supporting her husband while he climbed the corporate ladder; she managed the homestead. She participated in service and civic organization such as LaSertoma and Pharmacy Wives. She was a dedicated Primary teacher for 17 years. The bond she formed with the neighbor ladies on Eastwood Drive over 23 years led them to refer to themselves affectionately as "The Eastwood Sisters".
Melba and Joe relocated for 7 years to Pennsylvania where once again she left her home in Orem to support our dad as he took on a position at Merck Corporate Headquarters. She learned to love the Amish country and formed friendships with several Amish families. She loved the folk art, the farmlands and buggies. She was often the highest bidder at numerous Amish quilt auctions.
As a crafter herself, Mom created countless crocheted blankets for new babies, grandkids, and friends. She was a lover of music. It always filled our home. She loved Christmas and gift giving for any occasion. To the grandkids, grandma was the best at making hot chocolate, potato salad, corn chowder and fried rice. Grandma never forgot to have their favorites on the table.
After returning to Orem Joe and Melba lived on Coventry Circle, Melba extended love and support as a ministering sister for 20 years to the same three ladies.
Melba and Joe were sealed for time and all eternity in the Provo City Center temple on September 15, 2018.
Melba is survived by a sister Loa (Glenn) Tyler, her children, Jojean (Sam) Wright, David (K'Ann) Carlson, Hollie Carlson, Steven (Teresa) Carlson, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband Joe just two months ago. She is also preceded by her parents Norman and Hazel Myers, a sister Rosemary Rust, and a brother Norman B. Myers and twin granddaughters Faith and Grace Carlson.
The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks for the loving support we've been given though out her illness and struggles over the past few years. We wish to thank the Hillcrest 6th Ward, Jodie Ells, and the caregivers at Dignity Homecare and Hospice and Legacy House Assisted Living.
