Michael Bernd Schanderl, 80, of Payson, Utah, passed away on September 29, 2025. He was born on January 4, 1945, in Bremerhaven, Germany, to Anna Marie and Maximilian Schanderl.
Michael immigrated to the United States with his family at age 7. He grew up in Garden Grove, California, and spent time on his aunt and uncle's nut orchards. He graduated from Rancho Alamitos High School, where he lettered in track & field and developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors.
Michael enjoyed surfing, hunting, fishing, skiing, and spending time with family and friends. He had a deep love of classic cars, which he shared with his children and grandchildren. He also appreciated antiques, refinishing wood furniture, and loved quality craftsmanship.
Throughout his life, Michael worked in many areas, some included meat processor, Antique store owner, roofing, demolition, and salvage. Michael was a true entrepreneur. He owned and operated Bear Brick and Salvage in American Fork, where he would demolish and salvage historical building materials and antiques for resell. Michael considered demolition his favorite career. Michael also spent many years working at PST vans/U.S. Express as a trucking dispatcher. Michael also owned and operated Mike's Sub Shop in Lehi, Utah, where he named all of his sandwiches after old cars.
Michael's greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren. He was known for his wit, charm, and great sense of humor, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.
Michael is survived by his brother Maximilian Schanderl, his children Mandee (Kent) Pyne, Shane (Calley) Schanderl, and Eric Young and many cherished grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anna Marie and Maximilian Schanderl; his brother, Wolfgang Schanderl; and his sons, M. Ramsey Schanderl and Michael Emerson Schanderl.
