Michael immigrated to the United States with his family at age 7. He grew up in Garden Grove, California, and spent time on his aunt and uncle's nut orchards. He graduated from Rancho Alamitos High School, where he lettered in track & field and developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors.

Michael also owned and operated Mike's Sub Shop in Lehi, Utah, where he named all of his sandwiches after old cars.

Michael's greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren. He was known for his wit, charm, and great sense of humor, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.

Michael is survived by his brother Maximilian Schanderl, his children Mandee (Kent) Pyne, Shane (Calley) Schanderl, and Eric Young and many cherished grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, Anna Marie and Maximilian Schanderl; his brother, Wolfgang Schanderl; and his sons, M. Ramsey Schanderl and Michael Emerson Schanderl.
