Michael Jay Smith was born on June 20, 1948 in Huntington Park, California; he is the second child of Joe Butler Smith and Alice Virginia Rose Smith. His father was a hospital corpsman in the Navy at the time of his birth. He joined his older sister, Ginnie. Mike lived in San Diego all of his life except for a year and a half when he and his family lived in Guam while his dad was stationed there.

Mike graduated from high school and headed to BYU where he met Emily Howard. They were married in the Los Angeles temple on June 7, 1975, then settled in Orem. Mike tried many majors at BYU, and ended up starting his own janitorial service where he worked for 8 years before going to work in the physical facilities group for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He retired after 35 years in March of 2020. During these years Mike and Emily were blessed with four wonderful children: Erik, Laura, Nathan and Matthew. All of his kids have married and produced 11 incredible grandchildren who have been one of the greatest joys of his life.

Many good friendships were made and Mike served many people, often those who had burned bridges with their own families or had health or other issues. Mike was a faithful husband, a good father and grandpa, and a kind friend. He is survived by his wife, Emily, his kids Erik (Jane), Laura (Damon), Nathan (Julie) and Matthew, sister Ginnie (Marty), in-laws and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11:00 am with a viewing from 10:00-10:45 am at the Main Street Chapel at 1420 N Main Orem Utah.
