IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Miles Shafter
Bown
July 7, 1929 – November 7, 2024
It is with full hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Miles Shafter Bown Jr. who peacefully reunited with his parents on November 7, 2024, at the age of 95. A loving brother, father, grandfather, and an exceptional friend and mentor, Shafter's life was a testament of service, love and kindness.
Born to Miles Shafter Bown Sr. and Lola Baum Bown on July 7, 1929 in Provo, UT. Shafter grew up working for his father on the family's ranch. He attended Brigham Young High School and BYU. He served in the U.S. Army, later receiving an honorable discharge to care for his beloved mother during her illness. He provided her with love, comfort and unwavering support, an experience he spoke about for many years. He learned to play the piano by ear from his mother and often looked to music for joy, uplifting comfort and peace. He loved sharing this passion of music with others. He was active in sports, and believed in hard work and dedication. Such attributes helped him earn his letter as a member of the BYU Golf team.
His love of bowling brought joy not only to him but to everyone he mentored. He held a position as manager of the BYU Game Center where Shafter also served as coach of the men's and women's bowling teams leading them to the Nationals in Dayton, Ohio. He retired in 1995 after dedicating 31 years to BYU. He obtained his dealer license and opened a car lot, Bown's Lehi Motors. He took great pride in working with his customers ensuring trust and long lasting friendships.
He lived a life full of purpose, kindness, and unwavering faith as he actively served in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He shared his testimony of his Savior of which he had a deep conviction in God's plan for him and his family. His life was guided by a powerful and loving philosophy "It is always important to love people and to always have something kind to say."
As a father to Stephen, Barbara, Laurie, Scott, Julianne and Jennifer; and 5 adopted children Cristina, Laurietta, Sergio, Mario, and Michael, he instilled in all of us the value of hard work, compassion, and the importance of loving others. His love for his family was unwavering, and his sense of humor never failed to bring light into our lives. His love extended to his German Shepherds, each serving as a loyal companion.
He was also a loving grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his grandchildren will forever treasure the memories of time spent with him—whether it was listening to his stories and learning from his life lessons, or simply sitting beside him in comforting silence. Every moment with him was a gift. Though his presence will be missed my many, we find comfort in knowing that our Dad has entered into eternal rest with his Savior. We take solace in the knowledge that we will one day be reunited with him. We are forever grateful for the legacy he has left behind—his testimony, one of faith, love, integrity, and family.
Dad is preceded in death by his parents, son in law, Kim H. Peterson, a daughter in law, Linda L. Bown, and his daughter Laurietta. He is survived by his loving brother Roger L. Bown, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends who were touched by his giant yet-gentle spirit.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the exceptional providers from Active Home Health and Synergy Home Care, who supported us in providing Shafter with the utmost care and compassion. We are forever thankful for their love and dedication to our sweet father. Shafter's love and wisdom will precede us: " Live Simply, Love Generously, Care Deeply, and Speak Kindly."
