Nalani Young of Orem, Utah passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of July 10, 2021, after a 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 41 years old.
Nalani was born in Kahuku, Hawaii on March 20, 1980, to Carl Malele Fonoimoana and Alva Nalani Kalama Fonoimoana. In December of 1985, she and her family moved from Laie, Hawaii to Azusa, California. She graduated from Gladstone High School Class of 1998 and attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, shortly thereafter. She met David Dean Young in passing while visiting Provo, Utah in her high school years, and then became friends while attending Ricks. They were married for time and all eternity in the San Diego California Temple on December 21, 2000.
Nalani will always be remembered for her generosity, love, intelligence, creativity, talents, and fun. She was fiercely loyal and made time and space for everyone. She served in the community in big and small ways. For example, Nalani was the Kindness Club director, served in the PTA and was the reading coordinator at Cascade Elementary; she also painted elaborate sets for school plays, taught hula, piano and ukulele, and opened her home to so many in need. She served boldly and faithfully in church callings such as Primary and Young Women President, but her favorite calling was singing with the children as Primary Music Leader. She was awarded the Spirit of Orem award in 2019 for the incredible influence she had in the community. Nalani was a devoted wife and mother, and lived her life unapologetically with an unshakeable testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her husband, David Dean Young; her 4 of 5 children: Ammon Dean Kaohimaunu Young, Emma Victoria Pisilaula Young, Kawika Ioane Fonoimoana Young, and Aaron Mahunali'i Maka'alu Young; her father Carl Malele Fonoimoana, Sr.; and 10 of her 11 siblings, along with dozens of nieces and nephews whom she loved so much. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alva Nalani Kalama Fonoimoana; her sister, Sapi Nahele Fonoimoana; her daughter Eva Eliza Maunahina Young; along with her grandparents, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and 3 brothers-in-law. Family meant everything to Nalani, and she means everything to her family.
