Obituary

Norman Wilhelm Faldmo, Jr., passed away peacefully on August 17, 2021, in his son Chris's home in Saratoga Springs, UT, just two days after his 84th birthday. He quietly fought a 15 year battle with Parkinson's Disease and most recently myeloma cancer. Norm was born on August 15, 1937, in Salt Lake City, UT. His parents were Norman Wilhelm Faldmo Sr., and Erma Brunt Faldmo. He was the oldest of 4 children. Norm had a happy childhood and enjoyed learning the meaning of hard work as he worked alongside his dad, who worked as a metal lather. As a teen he enjoyed working on projects and tinkering with things. In high school he purchased a run down boat and fixed it up for himself and his friends. He graduated from Davis High School in 1956 where he played football for a year. After High School Norm had the unique opportunity to live in Hawaii with his family after High School while his father served a church labor mission to build the Church College of Hawaii (later named BYU Hawaii). He finished two years at the CCH and enlisted in the Army National Guard before being called to serve a church mission to Australia. After his mission, he enrolled at the University of Utah and graduated with a masters from their architecture program. Norm married his sweetheart, Carolyn Shurtliff on December 20, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had dated in high school and sparked up their relationship after he returned from his mission. Together they raised seven children. After graduating from the U of U and working in the private architectural sector for a few years, Norm received a job opportunity from Brigham Young University. He was in charge of the church school programs in Mexico, South America, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. He enjoyed his years traveling to these different countries and improving the buildings at the different campuses. Shortly after moving the family to an apartment in Orem, Norm designed and built his family's home on Carterville Rd. in Orem. Some of the buildings he was primarily responsible for planning and coordinating the build of at BYU were: the Tanner Building, the Cougar Stadium expansion, many of the student housing developments, the MTC expansion, the Wilkinson Student Center expansion, the Eyring and Benson Science buildings, the BYU Museum of Art, the new Athletic Complex, the underground library along with many other projects. As his years continued with BYU, his promotions took him to the position of Director of Architecture and Planning. Norm enjoyed the 32 years of working for Brigham Young University before retiring. While Norm's parents and brother owned Faldmo Tours and Travels, he would get to act as the host or tour guide for some of the tours. He and Caroloyn would bring one or two of their children along to the tours, being able to visit many states including Hawaii, and other countries like Canada, and in Europe. Norm's children and grandchildren appreciate the years of fun they have enjoyed together on their houseboat at Lake Powell and appreciate dad's hard work to keep everything shipshape and running! The family is also grateful for the emphasis Norm and Carolyn had on the family, as they arranged for Family reunions every 2 years for all the family to gather in fun places to strengthen their family bonds. After retirement, Norm and Carolyn did not slow down. They spent a year teaching English to University Students in Nanjing, China. They loved their time there connecting with the students and exploring that part of the world. Norm utilized his talents to help renovate the Luau area of the PCC and other projects at the PCC during his two church missions to the Polynesian Cultural Center and BYU Hawaii. It was unique that, just like his father, he was able to serve a mission building for the church in the same area! Norm was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served diligently in all of his callings, which included: Scoutmaster, Sunday School teacher, Young Men's President, High Councilor, Bishop for a BYU Student Ward, Branch President at the Missionary Training Center, Ward Mission Leader, and a Stake 70 member. He and Carolyn also served for a year in the Church Family History Center in St. George after their missions to Hawaii. Norm and Carolyn settled in St. George for their last 11 years together. They made dear friends, enjoyed the warmer weather, and took many trips traveling around the world. Some of their travels included: Baltic States, South Pacific, Scandinavia, Russia, Greece, Mexico, Alaska, and a trip to the Holy Land. They also enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren to celebrate their grandchildren's milestones and activities. Norman was an artist, builder, inventor, perfectionist, hard worker, peacemaker, problem-solver, helper, greatest supporter for his children, and an amazing example of Christlike love. He is survived by his children: Dave (Robin) of Jefferson, SD, Ann Gallagher (Shawn) of Springville, UT, Jill Clark (Jay) of Orem, UT, Chris (Aubrey) of Saratoga Springs, UT, Julie Nilson (Todd) of Saugus, CA, Steven (Lori) of St. George, UT and Jonathan (Valerie) of Heber City, UT. He is cherished by 29 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Karen Foster (John), Sunya Osborn (George), and Mark (Beverly). Norm has been reunited with his wife, Carolyn Shurtliff Faldmo, his parents Norm and Erma, and many more loved extended family. Norm will be tremendously missed as an incredible father, brother, papa, great-grandpa, friend, neighbor, and servant of Christ.
